20 Years Ago 'N Sync Tried to Sing the PokéRap

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Boy bands were it in pop music in the 1990s with fans flocking to the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. This is the era of Justin and Britney in matching denim on the red carpet. I was absolutely living it at the time, although I profess I was a traitor that liked both "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" as much as "Bye Bye Bye."

At the time, the Kids WB programming block was home to Animaniacs, Batman Beyond, Men in Black: The Series, and Pokémon. The channel decided to mix up the block by inviting the "hottest acts" of 1999 and putting them into the interstitials where they interacted with the characters. The Barenaked Ladies and 'N Sync each got the honor of hearing Warner Bros. cartoon characters attempt to sing their chart toppers.

'N Sync appeared on the block on May 1, 1999 and goofed around with Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Pinky and Elmyra before performing their own version of a dearly beloved cartoon theme, the Pokémon rap. Something tells me that J.C., Justin, Chris, Joey and Lance weren't too familiar with the creatures. Fans have had a few laughs at the group's pronunciation of "Muk" as "Mook," for example.

The Barenaked Ladies didn't have to rap while on the program, but they did try their hands at a Pokémon battle. Unfortunately, their underwear attack wasn't effective.
