Actor Ryō Kitazono diagnosed with retinal detachment, underwent surgery in Paris

The official website of the Touken Ranbu stage musicals announced on Saturday that actor Ryō Kitazono was diagnosed with retinal detachment and had to undergo surgery in Paris. Due to the surgery, he did not take the stage as the character Kogitsunemaru during the performance of the Touken Ranbu - Atsukashiyama Ibun stage musical in Paris on Sunday, but only performed with his voice. Kitazono also posted the announcement on his Twitter account.

Touken Ranbu - Atsukashiyama Ibun is the franchise's first stage musical. The performance in Paris is the production's first European performance, and it was held as part of the Japonisme 2018 event. The cast remained mostly the same as the play's first performance, but Masanori Tomita replaced Masaaki Okuno as Minamoto no Yoritomo (Tomita played the character in the third stage musical). The musical was staged at the Palais des congrès de Paris. After the Paris performance, the musical will return to Tokyo for a performance that runs from August 3 to August 19.

Touken Ranbu - Atsukashiyama Ibun held its first trial performance in 2015, with its debut run held from May to June 2016. The second musical, Touken Ranbu - Bakumatsu Tenrōden, ran from September to October 2016, with a final performance in Tokyo in November 2016. Tōken Ranbu Mihotose no Komoriuta, the franchise's third stage musical, ran from March to April 2017. Touken Ranbu - Tsuwamono Domo ga Yume no Ato, the fourth stage musical, debuted in December and ran through January.

The fifth stage musical debuted on March 24, with its final performance in Tokyo on May 6.

The musicals are also receiving a "Kashū Kiyomitsu Solo Performance" event and a third "Shinken Ranbu Sai" event.

The franchise is also inspiring a separate series of stage plays. The fifth stage play is running from June 2 to July 29.
