This was really good. I didn't think anything could displace Clair Obscur from the top of my "Game of the Year 2025" list, but this managed it. Two things really stood out for me.
First, the sound design is fantastic and the game is not shy about leaning on it. One particular combat sequence absolutely demands you listen for audio clues. During general exploration, paying close attention to sounds can reveal a lot about what's coming up, as well as fragments of background information.
Second, Ryukishi07's writing has really matured over the years. Higurashi is a classic (and I've a soft spot for Umineko's high camp grand guignol), but its second half is more "clever" than "scary" and its thematic depth isn't spectacular. Silent Hill f feels like a much more complete and developed work.
I also loved the little nods to Higurashi, with the background information about the dam construction project, the swamp-borne disease and so on.

Ah man, I’m such a >.< about scary games, but I’m also a sucker for scary games with strong stories. Fatal Frame 2 is one of my all-time faves. Hoo boy, do I just play this with the lights on…? Maybe only during daytime?

SH2R has that same issue with the combat. While not mandatory like in this, you're basically forced to fight while indoors since hallways/rooms are cramped to the point that you can't really maneuver around them. I do appreciate these last two games are actually making the monsters feel like legitimate threats to the player.

Some reviewers mentioned there are some very uncomfortable scenes even for people who tolerate on screen violence well. I want to play this with my partner but they’re a bit more sensitive when it comes to extreme violence although they can tolerate all the Resident Evil games. Can anyone say if there are any scenes that would bother a more sensitive player?

If he can tolerate all Resident Evil games, he can tolerate the gore here.
But I wouldn't say that the gory aspect of this game is the sort of violence in it that actually disturbs you. It's instead, the psychological dread that really makes you uncomfortable, even when the gore is nowhere near as explicitly brutal as let's say, some stuff you would see in Resident Evil 2 Remake.
But I can definitely say that the psychological toll of some of the violent scenes in this game is much more disturbing than anything Resident Evil delivers with gore, especially the rituals Hinako performs on herself .
So yeah, I don't think the gore specifically is the real "I want to turn my face away and stop seeing what is happening" factor here, so keep that in mind.

Yes, there are several (three) cutscenes with rather unsettling body mutilations. Explicit violence there happens outside the camera view, but still might be too much for some people. They specifically happen in a single chapter around midgame where you have to "perform a ritual" three times in an area marked as "main hall" on the game map. So you partner might want to sit this chapter out. Other than this there is one early cutscene (like 10 minutes into the game) which should have come with major trypophobia warning. Everything else should be palatable.

IronWish’s post just above this one is correct. There is also a sequence around a third of the way through the game where the player character has to do some things that will be intensely uncomfortable. Some of those things are very similar to things that happen in Higurashi, but the player’s role is different here and it is presented in a realistic, rather than anime, art style.

I haven't put too much time into the game (I'm so, so bad at the combat) but I'm enjoying it a lot so far. My first Silent Hill game! And it's absolutely gorgeous. Only real criticism I have (aside from that aforementioned skill issue) is that the monster designs are a bit hit-or-miss for me.
Still, the way everyone talks about this game -- especially how much it changes on multiple playthroughs -- make me very excited to see it through to the end. Which I'll hopefully manage before Halloween.

Thanks to everyone for the advice! Sounds like the difference between the violence in this and other survival horror is that the scenes can linger on the violence in a more realistic way which I think is what my partner seems to struggle with. Guess it makes sense that a traumatized teenage girl and cool military bro would experience horror differently.

I'm happy for Silent Hill fans that this turned out to be such a stellar new entry in the series.

Seriously, the game is in top three of Silent Hills for me. Probably 3 > 2 > f (yes, I'm a heretic who thinks 3 is better than 2 because of all the groundbreaking for its time topics and themes it talked about).
