According to a Video Game Industry Report preview by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) last Thursday, 51% of Japanese game studios use AI in development. Common uses of AI were for videos, images, stories, text, and programming. In addition, 32% of companies use AI to develop game engines.

The CESA conducted a survey for 198 companies that are on its members list from last June-July. Examples of member companies include bigger studios such as Bandai Namco, CAPCOM, Sega, Square Enix, and Koei Tecmo, as well as smaller indie studios. The CESA did not specify in the preview how each individual company answered, nor did it state how AI was used for each company that claimed usage.

The report also claimed that the average annual salary in the games industry in Japan is 7.23 million yen (about US$49,000), an increase of 150,000 yen (about US$1,000) from 2024. The average starting salary is 259,000 yen (about US$1,700), 23,000 yen (about US$155) higher than 2024. Around 200,000 people work in the games industry in Japan, with an average age of 37, and an average employment of seven years.

The CESA will release the full report in December.
