Black Tiger is a party of five up-and-coming prodigy adventurers known as the Miracle Children. Among these big names, Sol Rock was the only black sheep—mocked as a useless support mage, treated like a grunt, and eventually even kicked out...But the truth is, he has the strongest talent of all—Player! This godlike power allows him to buff his allies and control the flow of battle. And now, with no party to call his own, he begins to assemble the strongest group the world has ever seen...

The Boy Who Ruled the Monsters is a manga by Ketsuyuki Tamon adapted from a light novel series by Sin Guilty with character design by NAKAMURA 8. This volume is translated by Kamishiro Taishi and lettered by Adnazeer S. Macalangcom. Published by Yen Press (April 15, 2025). Rated 16+.

Is it just me, or has there been an uptick in shows focusing on main characters who have the gimmick of being better suited for support roles but still end up broken anyway? I know we have to keep finding ways to make these fantasy settings interesting, but this story feels tired before I even finish the first chapter. It doesn't help that I'm reading this off the back of watching I Left My A-Rank Party to Help My Former Students Reach the Dungeon Depths! because I feel like there are a lot of similarities. We have a well-mannered lead who needs to gather a party that he can power up with his support magic because he got kicked out of his previous group. He assembles a team that will be astronomically stronger than the previous ones, and he gets to have his moments where he acts cool and edgy the entire time.

There are cute things here, like how his first new party member is this godly yet innocent dragon. But outside of that, I feel like I don't know much about what the story wants to do. The world feels incredibly small as the story focuses on presenting a variety of ideas about adventure skills instead of actually showing them. We don't get to see many different locations, and I don't know enough about our main lead's goal to get attached to what he's doing. I feel like I barely know anything about the characters in this book outside of just one or two specific character traits, and that's not enough for me. This falls on the generic side of things, and you won't miss much by skipping it, unfortunately.
