I greatly enjoy and anticipate a quality dub. Some of us are visually impaired, which limits our ability to read subtitles from any sort of distance.
Unless it is the most gosh-awful thing I've ever heard, I'm going with the dub every time. |

Then you've got people like my father-in-law and his new wife. They watch the dub with subs, not because they're elitist and subs are better or some other crap like that. They do it because he enjoys hearing the sound track in his own native language, while she has hearing problems so needs the english subs. It's also not like he's some kinda illiterate country hick, in fact his favorite board game with his brothers is playing Scrabble using mostly obscure English Middle Ages words or Latin. Like has been said before, it's not a matter of which is better, it's a matter of personal choice.

I watch a mixture of dubs and subs. And if I want to be lazy it's none of your business. I don't speak Japanese. I don't pretend to. I miss things if I stay only in the sub or dub track. I can not always tell when a japanese person is slurring their words. Thus I can't pick up the sign of drunkness off the bat. I also can't tell the Kanasi accent, and don't want to nod my head when people make fun of each others speech.
If this is laziness, I accept it. I watch anime as entertainment. My skills are not in Languages. I am, however, studying Quantum physics. It sorta eats your brain away. After taking a max course load and working two jobs I want to relax. If you have a problem with that, then sit on it. You're not the fun police. BTW, want proof I what I say I am? Here's my class photo list. I am the one with a beard, glasses and Hawaiian Shirt. Prove yourself right. Not opinion. Scientific, repeatable, verifiable fact. You've said yourself, and I quote that you plan to "verify my hypothesis". In otherwords, you don't have proof yet. Until you've got proof (say a study of 1000 anime fans, 50% of which love dubs, and 50% of which love subs, overseen by a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist and a few other experts), stop putting your theory forward as fact. Furthermore, even if it is lazy to watch dubs, so what? Most people turn to television shows & movie and whatnot in order to relax.
Now, I'm not sure about you, but I certainly like to be lazy when I'm relaxing. 
(note: still haven't expressed my opinion of subs & dubs). |

Regardless of all other opinions that have been expressed on this subject, I would have to say that this is the clinching argument, defeating all others. I prefer subs to dubs, but I will defend* anyone's right to be lazy. - abunai *(well, no I won't, because I'm too lazy) |

Sword of Whedon, just because someone chooses to not read subtitles doesn't make them any lazier.
Think about this: You have two people. Both are at home watching Spirited Away, let's say. Person A is watching it dubbed. He is thinking about the dialogue, thinking about the symbolism in the story, thinking about all the little nuances in the art and formulating his own theories about what the story represents and what kind of messages the director was trying ot send. Person B is staring blankly at the subtitles, reading the words, but not thinking about anything beyond staring at subs. Who's lazy then? Unless you find a peer-reviewed scientific journal about an experiment with at least 100 participants, presided over by a neurologist, a biochemist, a psychologist, and a cognitive science specialist, using data gathered from CT CAT scans, MRIs, and EEGs, your "facts" are nothing but a load of bull. |

He makes a comment on how when you're watching subtitles part of that includes trying to comprehend the forign language. Sorry, but unless you're watching with the intention of actually understanding the language, it's going right in one ear and coming out the other. To say you're trying to comprehend the language while watching would be to say that you're trying to learn the language while watching which is impossible (unless you're some sort of savant which I doubt most anime fans are). But hey, shame on me for watching TV in english, I'm obviously just being lazy! What I should do is turn the volume down too low to understand and turn on the captions! There we go, now I'm much more intelegent than the next guy! Emerje |

Tenchi is obviously using the word "pretentious" in some novel fashion. Calling Spirited Away pretentious is kind of like calling Tenchi (the anime) gritty and hard-edged. |

Well, I've personally never seen any deep interpretations of Spirited Away that I haven't found pretentious, so "pretentious" is subjective.

Sorry, it's not just people's reactions to it, I also happen to find large stretches of the film itself pretentious. Especially the damn train ride. :P
EDIT: Also, I don't hate Spirited Away, I just find it overrated and pretentious. That's all. |
