I don't track anime-spending specifically, but looking at my history on the big sites, things have definitely leveled off this year. I've pretty much caught up with my backlog of titles that were already available on DVD when I started collecting, so there aren't as many big splurges to build the collection anymore... and I mostly avoided any massive "collector's item" buys, which raised my spending in 2009.

It looks like my total anime-related expenses were about $1700 for the year, with $1000 of that being from a massive artbook-buying-spree in September/October.

I buy based on the products I want and when they come out or when I discover a good sale. I don't really see a pattern other than it's generally around the $100 a month range. More if there's a lot I want comming out that month or less if it's a week bills are due or December which is time for buying other people things. I cap it off at arround half of what I make for the month if it gets that bad which it rarely does.

Well, I did my best to tally up my total expenses for 2010. It is about 98% accurate since I can not account for some things I bought in-store.

Anything that is on backorder or or pre-ordered, I consider as part of my total. I categorize artbooks, art boxes, T-shirts, and anything that is not a DVD, Blu-ray, manga, or light novel as miscellaneous. The full/half-season DVD and Blu-ray box sets are counted as one item. Omnibuses are counted as one item.

Here is the damage for 2010.

TRSI

24 orders
1 Got Anime? membership renewal
$1756.44 + $12.00 (for Got Anime? membership renewal)
28 DVD
5 Blu-ray
132 manga
4 light novel
4 miscellaneous

eBay

2 auctions won
$126.11
7 DVD
1 miscellaneous

Borders.com

1 order
$16.27
3 manga

Bandai Entertainment store

1 order
$79.96
2 DVD

Deep Discount

2 orders
$149.33
7 DVD

Totals

44 DVD
5 Blu-ray
135 Manga
4 Light novel
5 Miscellaneous
Amount spent - $2128.11 (plus an additional $12.00 for Got Anime? membership renewal)

Approximate grand total of everything spent of anime- and manga-related goods in 2010- $2140.11

This is a surprise to me since I just order and pre-order whatever whenever there is a TRSI sale and the numbers just add up fast. I also spent quite a lot on video games and TV shows every year as well. Hopefully, the totals for those will not be as much.

Wow, some of you must have quite the collections o.O. As for myself it was only this year that I really got the urge to own the titles I enjoyed in the past so my average expenditure is TBD. I've been trying to limit myself to $100 a month with end of year purchases being an exception to that rule. I stuck to it pretty well. I also have only bought titles after watching them and knowing that they are something I would like to own so this helps me keep purchases spread out. Only working part time at the moment and attending college so I have to be more sparing than most in my purchases. We'll see the damage this coming year has in store.

Doing a quick rundown and rounding a bunch of stuff off, I probably spent roughly $1800 on anime/manga this year. Which is slightly less than I thought, guessing more around the $2K range. Still, I feel that's too much. I'd like to spend less, but with Funimation's releases early in 2011, it's not looking good, and I may even spend MORE.

I really need to cut back. I thought I had, but like others, I think my spending has heavily switched to manga.

I probably would not have spent quite so much, except for CMX going out of business, and I was scrambling for some choice OOP series in the summer.

Did a final calculation. $897.04. Ouch. Good thing there's only about 3 releases in 2011 I want.

It's Wednesday, so I got a delivery from the comic shop:

Manga: $57.33
Figure: $87.46
Tax: $7.24

I listed the specifics over in the "What did you just buy" thread.

I just made an order with RACS which may or may not show up this year. I'll total up Friday in any case.

Hmm, I'll go ahead and do something very unusual for lazy people.

HMV: £150
Play: £40
Zavvi: £40
Amazon: £390
Tesco: £60
Base: £240
Anime-on-line: £150
ChoicesUK: £20

TRSI:
Items: $2420
Delivery: $250
Customs: 0 (still awaiting my recent order)*

They didn't charge me for my recent order yet, but I count it as a 2010 expense

Total estimated: £2800* breaking down to £230 monthly. Not quite as much as I spent on booze and fags. My insurance and gas cost me over £3k this year, besides the £2k unpaid tax stab in the butt.. and I no longer have that expense, so, wouldn't be surprised to see my budget skyrocket over my planned £300 monthly.
How much I import will be reflected on whether or not customs get my next order. I really, really hate this kind of tax.

How many DVDs/BDs did I watch in 2010? Code Geass, DTB, and that's it. Don't get it wrong, I don't buy out of guilt or duty.

What i spend varies greatly by month, so i only keep track of my approximate spending by year. From 2002 to 2008 my annual anime related spending gradually increased from approx. $2200 to approx. $4000, which averages out at about $3000 a year.

In 2009 i started to buy less anime, which meant i wasn't spending anywhere near as much as before. As such i figured the time was right to start collecting original cels and sketches from some of my favourite anime series, which is something i had been wanting to do for a long time. At the end of 2009 my anime related spending was about $3000, down a little from the previous year.

In 2010 however i started collecting anime production art (cels and sketches) in earnest, buying a lot of good pieces, but getting perhaps a bit carried away with this new hobby. I spent approx. $10.000 on anime production art and $1500 on anime DVDs/BDs in 2010, which together equals my total anime related spending for the 3 previous years combined. While i could afford it, i feel i've gone way overboard with my 2010 spending, so i'll be setting myself a fairly strict budget again of no more than $4000 worth of anime DVD/BD/Cel purchasing for 2011.

@Egoist
What is the current exchange rate, dollars to pounds or vice versa? Has it changed much this year?

Since you are dealing in both, I assume you have a handle on this.

I've always estimated with a quick "+50%". Basically, if I had £200, I'd instantly make it $300. For 2010 the exchange rate's been pretty stable around £1 = $1.5. Since I made my last order it went up a few cents... I hope it breaks into $1.6 by the time they charge me. Laughing

Thanks, the last time I had to deal with British money it was penny for penny. But that was when you still had 240 pennies to the pound (late 1967 in Malta).

I've got totals for 2010.

Anime: $2722.51
Manga: $3157.28
Novels: $138.11
Figures: $947.24
Magazines (Megami): $151.08
Misc.: $196.04
Shipping and handling: $390.79
Va. Sales Tax: $364.95
Total: $8068.00

For next year I'll keep a spread sheet.

No problem. If you want a quick reference, just type something like "100 pounds to dollars" on Google and it gives you the precise currency as of now.

Cripes, I just went and made a rough tally of last year's totals. I was expecting something like $1000-1500 but what I ended up with was:

$890.08 (+ $79.80 S&H) on manga* for a total of $969.88;
$560.20 (+ $29.08 S&H) on anime for a total of $589.28;
$751.13 (+ $197.42 S&H) on figures for a total of $948.55;
$154.09 (+ $15 S&H) on other merch (shitajiki, keychains, wallscrolls, toys, etc.) for a total of $169.09;

Grand totals: $2355.50 (+ $321.30 S&H) = $2676.80

That's not counting $92.22 on Asian live action titles as well as the Western media DVDs/TV boxsets/etc. I've picked up along the way. It might be time for me to pay a bit more attention to what I'm spending as I go, as that seems excessive to me... Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

...But later, of course, because I just started out the new year by preordering a handful of manga, hitting up RightStuf for the You're Beautiful boxset, and paying for my Ciel Azone doll which has finally been released. My January 2011 budget (whatever it was to be) is already ~$280 spent and it's only been a few hours.

*Fun Fact: Of the 98 manga purchased in 2010, exactly 4 were not BL: Ooku v3 & 4, Hetalia v01, and My Girlfriend Is a Geek v1. You could definitely say my manga collection lacks breadth. Laughing

I've been averaging about $200 a month since August. However, in December it was like $500, but a lot of it was cheep Funi stuff from a few years ago (eBay). I think I may cut back on anime. I'd like to start buying manga.
