Hakusensha Contest Seeks Manga Starring African Hero

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge
The winner's work will be serialized on Manga Park, Manga Park W apps

Japanese publisher Hakusensha's Manga Lab blog for aspiring manga creators is holding two contests for overseas artists. The publisher is accepting applications for “African Sci-Fi Hero Manga Creators” and “Shonen Manga Coliseum” contests.

The African Sci-Fi Hero Manga Contest is recruiting artists for a story that will center on an African hero. Submissions should be based on Hakusensha's tentatively titled READ manga by Rene Hoshino, a manga creator who raised in both Japan and Cameroon. The winner's work will be serialized on both the Manga Park and Manga Park W app, which launched in Africa earlier this year. Manga Park W has been downloaded over 200,000 times by users in Kenya and Nigeria with plans to expand it to more African countries soon.

The Shonen Manga Coliseum contest is looking for exciting manga for boys ranging from battle, fantasy, sci-fi, school clubs, sports, and isekai genres. The grand prize winner will have their work serialized on the Manga Park app, followed by a translation into English, and eventually publication on Manga Park W.

Applications for both contests will be accepted until October 15. The winners will be announced in November. Artists that are interested in applying in the African hero contest will need to submit an eight-page manga and full body images based on the two main characters shown on the contest page. Besides serialization, the grand prize winner will also receive 100,000 yen (about US$950) in prize money. Participants do not have to be African to enter.

Shonen Manga Coliseum contestants need to submit a 4-40 page original manga story for boys. The winner will also receive 100,000 yen (about US$950) in prize money. There are three entries already available for viewing.
