18 Anime, Manga Companies Publish Joint Statement Criticizing Use of Generative AI With Sora2 Program
posted on by Alex Mateo

According to the statement, Sora2 is using copyrighted works for machine learning, resulting in output that closely resembles the companies' content. Sora2 uses an opt-out system as opposed to an opt-in system, meaning that any work is theoretically usable on the program until companies request for their works to be removed, which is another case for copyright infringement, since Japanese copyright law protects created works and requires permission for usage.
CODA has requested that Sora2 not use its member companies' content for machine learning without permission, and that OpenAI responds to their claims regarding copyright infringement in order to protect creators' works and ensure healthy development of AI technology. The companies have also asked for a change to an opt-in system for allowing content in Sora2, transparency for machine training data, and appropriate compensation for rights holders who grant permission for their works to be used. The statement reassures that the companies are in support of advancing AI technology. However, they will not tolerate copyright infringement, and they will take legal action as necessary.
The companies involved are Akita Shoten, Ichijinsha, Ohzora Publishing Co., Kadokawa, Coamix, Kodansha, Shogakukan, Shonengahosha, Shinchosha, Square Enix, Takeshobo, TO Books, Nihon Bungeisha, Hakusensha, Futabasha, Houbunsha, LEED Publishing, and Nihon Mangaka Kyokai (Japan Cartoonists Association).
OpenAI launched Sora2 on September 30.
