OH GOD! OH GOD YES, THE HAPPINESS!!!!
I have seen this series in full, actually, it was with the charming British dub. In many ways, yes, it's just a scifi show for tweens, but it's so damn charming that I can't be mad at it. Also, I appreciate how Valerian and Laureline don't have a forced romance, it's almost refreshing to not automatically see a romance just because the leads are of opposite gender and are partners. It also prompted me to read the original comics (which are coming out at a snail's pace from UK publisher Cinebook, but at least it's in English, I think they're about half done now though), which are also quite enjoyable. I'm not looking forward to the movie much though, American audiences demand a terrible romance to be shoe-horned in, so I am expecting that. And I haven't really liked other things by the director either. I think it would've been better off in other hands on maybe Netflix or something. |

Interesting. I'd never heard of this show which is kind of weird since I was paying a LOT of attention to anime between 2006 and 2009. I'll have to try it out sometime.
However, this does give me a little bit of hope that the chances for a Basquash! license isn't absolutely zero, considering that it's also a Satelight production with French involvement. I can dream at least; I loved that little show, probably a little more than I should have. |

I'm curious about whether or not this license has anything to do with the Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets movie this summer, since they're based on the same source material.

Unfortunately, I think it's safe to say that the main reason this is getting licensed is because Luc Besson's live action adaption is coming out this summer. I watched Valerian & Laureline not too long ago on Crunchyroll. It's okay but not great. I love the original comics, so while it was fun to see the characters brought to life, some of the small changes here and there irked me. The commenter above mentioned that he liked that they weren't instantly paired together, but for me, one of the best parts of the comic is the sexy, confident interplay between the couple. The Valerian and Laureline of the anime seemed so much more childish in comparison... |

Oh, wow! I was on IMDb just this morning looking through upcoming movies for the rest of the year and it did not click that this was related to the Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets movie. Again, I'd never heard of this series before, but the movie looks cool so I'm a little more interested in checking out the series as a whole now. Thanks for the tip! |

Mwahaha, I just ordered some more of the comics online (I sort of have some gaps, my comic shops were random with getting some in, but not most and it's a mess and I've been ordering them online mostly). It seems I was wrong though, at first I know Cinebook was doing two a year, but now it looks like they've drastically sped up the releases, possibly because of the movie, yes. Looks like it's every other month now.
It also looks like they're releasing a special version of City of Shifting Water it's on Amazon here to coincide with the movie (also, is the movie based on the first or second story? The name has elements from both, so it's confusing to me). Still, maybe the movie will make it easier for me to find future books in the series, I mostly need to get them online (because UK publisher and I live in the US). I found AbeBooks to be the cheapest place to get them, factoring in shipping. |

I've been pre-ordering them religiously off of Amazon. I used to collect the old English translated volumes that Dargaud put out in the 80s, and I always wished that they hadn't discontinued their translations, so when Cinebook picked up the license, I began religiously pre-ordering them off of Amazon. I actually prefer the embellishment of the older translations, but the print quality is way better on the newer volumes, so it's kind of apples and oranges.
Thanks for reminding me about this; I hadn't realized that Amazon put it up already.
It's based on L'Empire des Mille Planètes. I have no idea why they changed the title, but I guess we'll find out. |

^I actually didn't find out it was available in English until after I saw a random volume (#7, I believe) in one of my comic shops. Of course, I snatched it up on the spot (it was in their overstock bin for $5) then looked more into it online. But the cartoon was what got me interested in the first place anyway, so odds are I must've seen it before Cinebook started releasing it in 2010, so it's been a while.
I just watched ep 1 again on Crunchyroll, I had forgotten how damn impressive a juggler Laureline is. I can do some decent juggling myself (of course to people who can't, any decent juggling is extremely impressive juggling), but she's doing a 5-club Mills' Mess trick, that's really really damn impressive! She's doing it with torches, but torches and knives are the same as clubs, for juggling purposes. I can't even do 5 balls (4 is my max for balls, 3 for clubs), although I can do 3-ball Mills' Mess (it's hardly the most difficult trick I can do, but it's a good advanced trick for a beginner, but of course, any more than 3 balls in the first place is pretty tough and then adding a trick in makes it more impressive). The fact that I can recognize her juggling as accurate means that they must've had a reference (probably film of someone doing it for real) that they actually used for the show. It makes my inner juggling nerd very happy, I must say! On a side note, I actually have used juggling knives before, they're completely flat and not sharp in the least, but they're still kind of scary because you still think they're going to cut you (even though they can't). Anyway, with my order just now, I'll have the first 11 volumes once they come in. I'll worry about getting vol 12+ later I suppose. But since some of us already have the first two volumes, I really hope they'll release Bad Dreams on its own too. |

Kinda frustrating that the release doesn't appear to include either of the two production language audio tracks, though. I would have been keenly interested in this because I'm a French language learner and Laureline is a cutie pie, but not having the option to watch in either of the original languages is a killer for me. If this is a matter of not having the rights to publish those audio tracks, then Sentai and EuropaCorp have both made a mistake as far as I'm concerned.
