This is a system I could definitely get behind: a reward system for viewing anime legally, the ability to give your coins back to the creators, etc.

Hmmm, is this a news article or free advertisement for TOM? I see their ads at the bottom of most pages and yet, ANN doesn't have a disclaimer that TOM supports the website by buying ad space. Or any disclaimer of any kind. It's even more ironic with the plea for money at the top of all the pages because :good journalism:.

Personally, I think cryptocurrency you can earn by watching, sharing and reviewing anime is definitely news. For what its worth, I saw this story yesterday on CR's new feed, and they certainly aren't supported by TOM ad revenue, as far as I can tell. While it does sound enticing, I'm still skeptical. I wouldn't want the value of the currency to fluctuate significantly day to day (even hour to hour) and I'd like to see blockchain technology become more proven outside cryptocurrencies before signing on to such a thing. |

The original Bitcoin is largely useless and wastes absurd amounts of electricity. The other variants are even more useless. We really don't need yet another cryptocurrency.
If "otaku coins" somehow became successful, we'd get armies of bots watching anime and spamming out reviews to earn coins, defeating what little purpose it might have. |

This would be better than things like bitcoin, though, since you'd earn them by doing things you already do (watching anime and the like) and because you'd use them to buy stuff from TOM and possibly other places. It's more like a rewards program than a cryptocurrency, really. |

It sounds exactly like a rewards program--Seems like the only reason they attached Buzzword '17 "Bitcoin" to it was to get our attention and sound really Crypto-Current. That, or the idea of "uniting otaku" by hoping to getting different companies and franchises under one banner, which would seem revolutionary to more Japanese companies that don't see the need to unite for their customer demographics. Still, at least all a customer-rewards program can do is fail or fold, and not crash with an economic bubble. |

Seems like you have no clue about cryptocurrencies at all. I will defenitely get myself some Otakucoin on the ICO if it happens. |

Exactly what I was thinking, it's just a reward program that can be shared with various vendors. It's alike a Plenti card for otaku. Emerje |

That is the impression I got, as well. It seems to have a specific way to earn and then use "coins" which doesn't sound all that different from a rewards program with a store or credit card. I'm at least more comfortable with that idea than cryptocurrency. Since this is still in the planning stage, it's possible that they might decide it is better to call it a rewards program. That idea of donating your coins to help support animators is interest, though I would still want some sort of verification on how it is being used. |

It may be like a rewards program, but it does still use cryptocurrency. It’s just that the rewards program is paid in cryptocurrency via that cryptocurrency’s infrastructure rather than through a payment company like Visa or PayPal.

I came here to bash this, but this is honestly a good way of looking at this option. As long as this currency is not monopolized by any one site or organization, it could be very helpful in freeing up some content, merch, or promotions not already tied to my already extremely limited physical currency (RIP, Christmas). I don't want another membership card to sites I already use, but I'd be definitely open to the idea of rewarding legal streaming. As far as creators getting a little of their love back, unfortunately, I don't think this is very realistic. Japan is having trouble paying animators, directors, and animation companies enough right now (relating to several articles on ANN in the last year). I want this to change, but as an overseas fan, I don't feel like I can provide much of an impact apart from loyalty to legal accessibility. If this currency were only applied to production companies, it would just add another layer to an already convoluted system. |
