A fair review. Aside from its much sharper animation there wasn't much anything that was remarkable or memorable, but as a fan of the first two movies (which were better, in my opinion) it's a fun watch regardless.

Having first encountered it in manga form, I want to watch it for its story; these new productions just won't let me. |

I'd have to rewatch the earlier movies, I don't recall this being in them, but in the manga he was already a cyborg before going to Olympus. |

According to the data book, Briareos became a cyborg while he and Deunan was living with Deunan's father.
The move to Olympus happens five years after that. The only animated form of Appleseed I've watched is the first OAV, which was a really sloppy condense of various manga volume storylines, though mostly the gun platform one. It -- which is to say the dub -- also renamed Briareos into "Buliaros". Deunan got a new name too, but hell if I can remember what it was. |

I'm a big Shirow fan and I enjoyed the first two movies, so I'll definitely check this out when I have the chance. It does look like this is visually the best looking of all the Appleseed adaptations so far. And since the look is such an important part, it sounds like it'll still be a fun watch even if the story isn't great.
I'd love to see a TV or OVA adaptation that attempts to finish the storyline from the first two manga volumes. I know Appleseed XIII tries something like that, but I've heard mixed things about it so it'd be nice if they took another chance, maybe. |

Well this film is not an adaption but it certainly has some action sequences taken directly from the first pages of the manga. It's a [expletive] catastrophe that Shirow never completed Appleseed. I'll take Appleseed Alpha over any other CG or had drawn adaptation of Appleseed. Looking forward to Appleseed Beta, Hitomi and Athena.

Looking at that cover (and not having any Photoshop of my own), I have to ask whether anyone's yet done a Disney parody of Appleseed with Baymax and Major Calhoun.

I found this the most enjoyable of all the Appleseed movies and anime episodes. In my opinion its the most rewatchable of them all and worth owning. I rented this on Bluray and purchased it the next day. Compared to the others and even many CGI files like Final Fantasy the Spirts Within, this movie has vastly superior CGI and motion capture. You can raise the bar to statospheric, block buster levels and give this an A-, but in my opinion it deserves an A+ for its CGI and overall character design and animation. Especially when you consider this was likely produced for less than the original film.
Slight spoiler alert. It was fun to see a film with fewer characters and Deunan being the only 100% human in the movie was interesting. Parts of the movie felt like playing Gears of War with the ending feeling a lot like the Wild Wild West (1999). Watching Briareos play with a 50 BMG rifle like its an AR-15 shows his strengths far more than flipping a humvee. The main antagonist’s enforcer was a true beauty and beast. |
