Cool.

Edit - Now that I've gone and watched the trailer, I have to say the animation is kind of terrible.

i think your color blind. for one thing its a lot better animatedwise compared to the 90's version. also the animation and art is more faithful towards the manga version and artwork of the author which is what those diehard moonies wanted.

Now that Setsuna/Sailor Pluto appeared on the show, I'm certain the other Outer Senshi will make their appearances as well. Smile

If by the animation being more faithful to the manga you mean it's mostly still images, then mission accomplished.

And I think you should run your shit through spell check. Don't try to come for me unless you can put together something legible because I do not have time for that. Nor do I have time for someone whose immediate response to an opinion they don't like is to throw around insults. Seriously, the admins need to step it up. This is probably like the third time I've been attacked unprovoked.

The broadcast version is the half-hearted 22-minute commercial for the Blu-Ray that TRUE FANS should be importing. Rolling Eyes

I've been watching the streams, and I'm still on the fence as to whether I want to spend my dough on what is basically a glorified motion comic.

Classic Sailor Moon had filler, sure, but it had heart. Crystal seems to be missing its heart.

Chibi Moon came packing heat. That escalated quickly. I don't remember how that scene looked in the English dub.

Doesn't look like the animation will improve any time soon either. Sailor Moon Crystal could have been a motion comic and I probably wouldn't notice much of a difference.

Saying that the animation is better than it was 20 years ago is not much of a compliment. I would much rather like to be able to say that the animation is aligned with what quality modern shows are doing. I cannot.

I have to disagree whole-heartedly. I grew up with the first version, but I feel that the first Sailor Moon anime is looked at with nostalgia goggles... When you go back, it's really, really not that great... And then I read the manga, and WOW THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER.
So having a faithful manga adaptation without skiing episodes, skating episodes, weird original characters, twin aliens, monsters of the week, is actually pretty refreshing, and is something I've waited for for a long time. ^^

I also think people forget that the animation for the first series was actually pretty bad, too... ^^;

Only if they choose to adapt the S arc, which is when they debut.

My only question is, why is the encyclopedia treating this as a separate series? That makes sense when the staff changes or when there's a new subtitle, but neither seem to be the case here. Shouldn't the two entries (one marked 2014 and the other 2015) be collapsed into a single, ongoing series?

Otherwise, the second season of Sailor Moon in the original anime was a big step up in both story and characterization. I don't know whether that was due to a change in the manga or the change in director (Ikuni!). If it was a change in the manga, then I may want to give this new arc a second chance in the remake.

The original sailor moon had decent animation for the standards of the 90s, you want to see pretty bad animation that aired in broadcast TV then watch the first episodes of Ranma 1/2 Netthouhen (it is called season 2 over here).

I am really tired of the "adaptations that are carbon copies of the manga are superior" crowd, we had the same argument when the last Rozen Maiden anime aired and it had better animation than this motion comic which is selling only because of the hard core fans.

No Sailor Moon fan of any kind asked for it to look like the manga.... This looks NOTHING like the manga. The manga at least had life to it, whereas everything in Crystal looks like a poorly drawn blow-up doll. If you compare the faces (and Usagi's massive head) to the designs in the manga, they're completely different. Hell, the ORIGINAL anime was more closer to it. Everyone was fine and happy with the Ikuko Ito designs the series left off with, and the majority of fans would have given anything to have had her come back to do the character design once more.

The animation is flat out terrible in Crystal. Sure, the original anime wasn't top quality either, but it at least had a life to it-- and shit-- a lot of the episodes WERE better animated than anything in Crystal.

I agree with mangamuscle.
When an anime tries to strictly follow the manga, it usually kills the pacing that makes anime enjoyable, or draw one into the atmosphere.
Rozen Maiden was a fine example of how copying something awkwardly can ruin a series; and Sailor Moon Crystal is yet another.
I still have hopes that they will ligthen up a bit this coming arc, Chibi Usa's character gives a perfect chance.

The animation is dreadful in Crystal, and the characters are frequently drawn distractingly off-model, but it's the lack of a soul that upsets me. The friendship between the girls and the love between Usagi and Mamoru is all talk in this version, like they've copy-pasted these characters over a script for Twilight. You don't need dozens of episodes of filler to show the girls maybe having fun or having a personality! Crystal takes itself far too seriously, which for a show where almost literally every other sentence contains the phrase "Legendary Silver Crystal" is a death sentence.

I really hope you're joking here.

I find the artwork horrible, and I've dropped Crystal. Never thought I would do this to SM, but I'm not going to support an inferior product.

Yes, the first season of the original series had some lackluster animation. But it also had awesome transformation and attack sequences. And let's be honest; When you originally watched the series, you did so because you fell in love with the characters. They might have shared your same interests, same hardships, etc. This lack of "heart", which was largely created through filler episodes, is what this series is missing.

And Ikuko Ito. What I would have given to have her character design work for this series.
