Watch Matsuno Brothers Get Moulded Out of Clay, Glass

posted on by Eric Stimson
... felt, rice flour...

Thanks to the success of this fall's anime, Mr. Osomatsu — and doubtlessly the simplicity of its character designs — the anime's main characters, the Matsuno Brothers, have become favorite subjects for amateur artisans in Japan.

Sūmaru, a Let's Player, also has a knack for working with clay, and has accordingly posted this video instructing fans of Mr. Osomatsu how to craft the brothers out of it. Her own illustrations help keep things light and silly, with the mischievous brothers working up a sweat just by kneading clay, ignoring Choromatsu's suggestion to use gloves when working with paint, and mixing all the paints together to replicate the look of the original Osomatsu-kun (which was black-and-white). Osomatsu chooses some ghastly expressions to represent his brothers.

Sūmaru uses wheat clay with corn starch to provide firmness and holds the pieces together with bamboo skewers and glue. She also recommends a knife, sewing needle, Q-tips, and hand lotion for cleanup afterward. The final result: a tableau that recreates the final scene in the anime's opening sequence.

Meanwhile, other artisans have taken to Nico Nico Douga to apply their favorite crafts to Mr. Osomatsu. The above video shows how to make a very bug-eyed Matsuno brother out of glass. This video shows how to craft the Matsuno Brothers out of wool felt held together by wires. This video shows how to make shiratama (sweet rice cakes) shaped like the Matsuno Brothers. The possibilities are endless!
