Morning Show Recreates Fuji's 'White Whale' Technique From Prince of Tennis

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

The informational entertainment morning program ZIP! attempted to recreate Prince of Tennis character Shusuke Fuji's Hakugei (White Whale) technique on Wednesday. Former professional tennis player Takefumi Satō joined the show's regular cast to attempt the feat.

To use Hakugei, Fuji hits the ball with a super backhand slice, which makes it hop. Then the ball falls suddenly at the baseline. Due to a headwind and the ball's strong backspin, the ball returns to Fuji's side of the court.

Satō somehow managed to pull off the move. Granted, his recreation lacked some of the criteria of Fuji's technique such as a headwind and the ball falling at the baseline. Nevertheless, creating a complicated anime sports move in the real world is an accomplishment.

Fuji is a popular character in The Prince of Tennis universe, and his first duet CD single with Kunimitsu Tezuka in nine years debuted on Wednesday. The character also contributes to the veritable avalanche of chocolate Valentines Shueisha receives for the franchise's characters each year. One fan in particular sent 8,000 LOOK chocolates to Fuji in 2014.
