Telegraph Video on Studio Ghibli

Film critic Robbie Collin discusses how East meets West in Ghibli animation

The Telegraph newspaper has released a four-minute video blog about Studio Ghibli, presented by its film critic Robbie Collin. A longtime admirer of Ghibli, Collin discusses 'Studio Ghibli's Unique East Meets West Animation Style.'

Going back to the 1968 pre-Ghibli film The Little Norse Prince, directed by Isao Takahata, Collin says that it was then that Takahata discovered that 'cultural intermingling generates its own sense of wonderment.'

Collin also uses clips from My Neighbor Totoro, arguing that the film's family house has a 'beautiful dissonance' in its mixture of Japanese and Western features.

The video also cites Laputa: Castle in the Sky with its Welsh scenery, Only Yesterday with its Bulgarian folk chants and the recent Ghibli-esque film Mary and The Witch's Flower.
