KyoMAF: Traditional Crafts Workshop

Traditional Crafts: Tesuri Hand Printing

KyoMAF takes advantage of all the traditional artisans and shops housed in Kyoto and the surrounding areas. Official merchandise each year includes traditional goods with an anime flair, and attendees can also try their hand at different traditional craft techniques. This year fans could learn Tesuri (hand printing) or folding fan painting. The folding fan painting workshop was for a Re:Zero folding fan.

For the Tesuri workshop, attendees could print on coasters, tote bags, or tenugui cloths, among other items. Attendees can choose between more traditional patterns such as flowers or crests, or anime-related images for properties like The Eccentric Family, Pokémon, Yowamushi Pedal, A Certain Magical Index, and more.

A staff member works with attendees to create the print. First, you line up the print on the cloth you've chosen; in this case, it's a flower design on a coaster.

The staff member then puts the paint on the wooden paddle pictured above left, and attendees use the paddle to apply the paint to the cloth.

Lastly, you blowdry the print for about three minutes and it's done!

The event also featured traditional stamps with an Eccentric Family twist, and attendees could watch the stampmaker at work.
