Manga over novels?

Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development report shows Japanese high schoolers reading more manga, fewer novels

According to a report yesterday from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Japanese first-year senior high school students read an uncommonly high proportion of shorter text passages in magazines and comics, while relatively few are accustomed to reading longer novel-length texts.

The survey showed that among 27 of 30 OECD member countries, the proportion of first-year high school students who read only short passages of text is highest in Japan, while the proportion of those who read long passages of text is the smallest. It is not surprising that students prefer comics to novels, but the proportion compared to those of other OECD contries is a somewhat startling discovery.
