Gold Coast Supanova Pop Culture Expo on this Weekend!

Supanova rolls into Queensland on it's second stop of the 2013 tour at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre from Friday the 19th to Sunday the 21st of April 2013. Their special guests include Mamoru Hosada (Summer Wars, Wolf Children), Vic Mignogna (Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater), Yūko Miyamura (Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo), Greg Cipes (Astro Boy, Ben 10 Omniverse) and Steve Yun (Robotech).

  • When: Friday the 19th April (Supanova Preview Night), Saturday the 20th to Sunday the 21st (Main Show).
  • Where: Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre, Cnr Gold Coast Highway & TE Peters Drive, Broadbeach, Queensland 4218.
  • How Much: Weekend Pass - $47.50 online $55.00 at the door. Day Pass - $27.50 online $30.00 at the door.

Mamoru Hosada

Mamoru Hosoda is a Japanese film director that started work as a key animator on Crying Freeman, Sailor Moon and Slam Dunk, however he soon moved onto directing anime films with the first two Digimon Adventure movies followed by the sixth One Piece movie. However you will most likely know Hosoda from his work directing Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and most recently Wolf Children.

Mamoru Hosada will be appearing at Supanova on Saturday the 20th of April alongside Studio Chizu producer Yuchiro Saito. Hosada will be signing for the first 30 fans that attend his signing session at 12pm on Saturday (more than likely to be held at the Madman Entertainment booth) and will sign items for another 30 fans after his panel "Mamoru Hosada and Yuchiro Saito: Wolf Children and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" at 2:45 in the Madman National Cosplay Championship Theatre. Fans that ask a question of Hosada during his panel will be given priority access to signing. And Madman Entertainment informs us that there will be a maximum of one signature per person.

Vic Mignogna

Vic Mignogna has a extensive list of voice actor credits having appeared in over 190 different anime titles and over 40 video games. You are mostly likely to know Mignogna as Eldward Elric in Fullmetal Alchemist / Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood but he has also voiced Death Scythe in Soul Eater, Broly in Dragon Ball Z, Fay D. Flourite in Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE, Ikkaku Madarame in Bleach and Tamaki Suou in Ouran High School Host Club. His video game roles include Junpei Lori in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3, Dampierre in Soulcalibur and Mao in Disgaea. Vic will be holding "Vic Mignogna: Voice Idol!" in the Madman National Cosplay Championship Theatre at 3:30pm on Saturday and 11:45am Sunday.

Yūko Miyamura

Yūko Miyamura is an actress, j-pop singer and director. She is famously known as the Japanese voice-actor for Asuka Langley Shikinami in Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Rebuild of Evangelion films including most recently Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. Yūko Miyamura has voiced characters in a long list of anime and video games including Casca in Berserk, Kazuha Toyama in Detective Conan, Alyssa Searrs in My-HiME and NieA in NieA_7. Miyamura is also well-known for voicing Chun-Li in the Street Fighter game series. Yuko will be talking at "Yūko Miyamura: Sensational Seiyu" at 2:00pm on Saturday and 3:30pm Sunday in the Madman National Cosplay Championship Theatre.

Greg Cipes

Greg Cipes is a multi-talented voice actor who has exactly one anime VA role, Atlas in the 2003 Astro Boy series. However he's also the voice of Beast Boy in the cartoon series Teen Titans and DC Universe Online, Keven Levin in Ben 10 Alien Force, Ultimate Alien and Omniverse, Iron Fist in Ultimate Spider Man and is the voice of Michaelangelo in the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Greg will hosting "Greg Cipes: Ultimate Alien, Iron Fist or Turtle?" at 1:15pm on Sunday in the Madman National Cosplay Championship Theatre

Steve Yun

Steve Yun got his first job at an anime company in 1998 as a digital animator, but after slaving away for hellishly long weeks he quit and obtained his B.A. in Creative Writing. After finishing college Yun joined Harmony Gold and built Robotech.com and went onto co-produce the Macross restoration, the Robotech: Battlecry and Robotech: Invasion video games and Robotech remasters and wrote Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles OVA. Steve will be talking about Robotech in the "Steve Yun: Revelling in Robotech" panel at 11:45am on Saturday and "Steve Yun: Robotech Revealed" on Sunday at 11:00am in the Madman National Cosplay Championship Theatre.

    • Sunday 4:15pm - Madman Cosplay Competition - Madman National Cosplay Championship Theatre

Don't forget that you can visit the Hanabee booth on Saturday to enter their Neuromania, a Anime & Pop Culture Quiz. You'll be placed into teams, compete on knowledge and if you make it through, be on the MNCC Theatre stage for the final on Sunday to win great prizes!

Also due to the Gold Coast Film Festival and Queensland Pop Culture Week there are a variety of other events occuring around the Gold Coast alongside Supanova.

Cosplay Parade

The parade will start in Broadbeach from 9am on Sunday the 21st of April. The parade will march up the Broadbeach mall and into the gates of Supanova Gold Coast in time for it's 10am open. You can find further information this event here.

And there is the "Cool Japan" events on this weekend including a cinema screening of Wolf Children and Q & A with Director Mamoru Hosada and Producer Yuchiro Saito on Saturday, a screening of Carl Macek's Robotech Universe followed by Steve Yun Q & A and the Evangelion Art Exhibition has opened at the The Arts Centre Gold Coast.
