There is the kind of con where someone pretends to be a relative who's in trouble and needs bail money. Usually the mark is an older person, and the con pretends to be a grandchild or nephew/niece, and they ask for credit card information.

Bail money, shark loan, in Japan, not credit card but paper money by wire or manual delivery. It's still a paper society.

Credit card fraud could refund your money and be traced. Paper money, no such luck.

Apparently, families don't talk enough to each other (yet willing to send money) that a simple return phone call couldn't fix.

Maybe they're people pretending to be long-lost relatives, kind of like how winning the lottery usually means you get more long-lost relatives asking for some of that money.

Money makes people do some very strange things.
