Obviously Jerry Springer isn't going to be as good as Shakesphere, but to act like entertainment exists in some sort of set-in-stone pecking order is ridiculous.

I don't think it's so much the "If it's popular, it must suck" doctrine with the culture levels. Just look at Shakespeare; his works are still being studied and performed after countless generations. I believe the thought behind the high/medium/low culture system is "I enjoy Shakespeare and classical music, so it necessarily follows that I am more refined and dignified than someone who enjoys jazz and science fiction." I'd find it hard to believe that the persons responsible for the devising and propagation of this culture classification weren't of the "high culture" type. But, it should be said that most everyone does something self-serving like this every so often.

I have some advice for the voice acting letter. I'm 16 years old, and I also plan to go into the voice acting world. High school isn't the only way to gain experience. First, find out what's in your area acting wise. Take acting lessons if you can. If you have a local theatre program, try to get invovled in that. There's alot of other things besides high school theatre out there. If you have a microphone, you can amature voice act online. Go to sites like http://www.voiceactingalliance.com/board and audition for radio plays and fandubs. As some have suggested, don't focus just on anime. I recently auditioned for Funimation but I'm also trying to branch out. Tommorow, as a matter of fact, I'm going to audition for the Texas radio theatre http://www.texasradiotheatre.com Try to find a place like this in your local area. Now, where you live can play a big role as well. The 4 main places for anime voice acting is Texas, California, New York, and Canada. For acting in general Cali is where it's at. Especially if you live in one of those 4 places there are alot of opportunities out there. When you go to college major in theatre, radio & television, etc. But also minor in something that can pay the bills. If you're trying to get into anime voice over, alot of the time it's about who you know. Try to get advice and help from other professional voice actors because, trust me, they help you tons if they see that you are serious and dedicated enough. DON'T DO THIS JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE AN ANIME FAN! If you do it just because you love anime and think that you can voice in your favorite shows that is the worst possible reason. This job doesn't pay the bills and requires alot of sacrifice, patience, and some times dumb luck. If you are serious, go for it, but if you doing it just to be in your favorite animes, please don't.

I disagree entirely.

Suck & culture are not one and the same. Something can be high brow and can be completely and utterly bad.

You can have extremely enjoyable shows that are low culture.

I'm perfectly aware that most of what I watch is medium or low culture.

What most people should realise is that our society currently prefers low/mid culture. Something isn't automatically low culture if its popular, but statisticly, odds are that it isn't high culture. Most of the highest rated shows on TV (CSI for example) are somewhere in the mid culture range (I'd say low mid).

I find it interesting that people are talking about the Modernist artistic hierarchy without actually pointing out that the Modernists, in practice, actually were a bunch of stuffy elitists who were implying that their own tastes were superior to everyone else's. It's sort of the spark for the Post-Modernist school of thought.

Strike currently and you would be closer to the point.

Notice that nothing "high-class" was developed in the last century or three. It's good to know the the US has never developed anything "high-class"...

Also notice that several of the mid and high class items would not have been considered as high close to their inception. Shakespreare would not have been considered "high-class" in the Elizabethan era, and Jazz was definitely consider low class when it was developed.

Better yet, weigh the academic papers written about each subject. The heaviest will be called high-class and I think you can follow the rest...

I disagree on some Answerman's categorization. FMA and Gankutsuo as middle culture (I think a LITTLE higher than average middle culture), I can understand, but I think Naruto and Bleach deserve this level (a very broad one) as well. If Harry Potter and the Simpsons are considered higher level than "low" and "mass" entertainment, I think "typical" series like Naruto and Bleach deserve the same level. It's entertainment and not high-culture, but it isn't COMPLETELY instant and brainless gratification.

As "low" and "mass" entertainment goes, I'd probably consider the REALLY lower series, like harem anime or pointless porn, or just blood-and-guts without a story. Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, with the episodic structure and little story development, deserve this title a lot more than Naruto and Bleach do.

Dude, you need to slow down, use grammar and a spell checker. I can't understand what you're saying. It's especially difficult when you spell things 3 different ways in a single post.

When are the corrections to last week's column going to be made? It still says Pioneer dubbed the first 67 episodes of DBZ and doesn't mention the Trigun movie.

I'm sorry, when was it promised that I'd go back and change last week's column to make you happy?

The answers are technically correct. Nitpicking and then demanding that changes be made is ridiculous and self-serving.

Pioneer released edited, dubbed editions, and that's what the column is referring to.

It says that, "that's where Pioneer's heavily edited dub ended" which makes it look like they're the ones who made it. Funimation made the dub while in conjunction with Saban, and then they sold the rights to the first edited 67 episodes to Pioneer. Funimation didn't have any uncut/duals at the times, so it's unlikely Pioneer were sold rights to them them. (not counting the movies which was a whole different situation). Even later, it's not even known if Pioneer could have gotten the rights to redub it/release it uncut from either Toei and/or Funimation had they wanted to.

It'd be the same as calling One Piece episodes 1-112 (hypothetical number/situation) where "Pioneer's heavily edited dub of One Piece ended" if 4Kids sold the edited-dvd rights to Pioneer for those episodes then later reacquired them. You could argue it'd be technically correct to say that, since Pioneer owned the rights to those episodes and thus it was technically "their dub", but Pioneer didn't make the dub at all nor were they responsible for it. The problem with the answer is that some people reading it will blame the wrong companies for the dub. It should say something like, "that's where Pioneer's rights to Funimation's heavily edited dub (made under Saban's supervision) ended."

Basically everyone is going to disagree with one another's take on what shows are "middle" culture versus "low" culture. One man's Nascar racing is another man's Masterpiece Theatre.
