That's interesting, I didn't know that China had a dearth of women. That could be disastrous in the long term. Definitely something I'll have to research. I'm curious how the one child per family policy would effect the gender ratio though. Is this due to first borns being male more often the female? Confused

No, I believe sex-selective abortion, abandonment, and even infanticide of female babies were more common reasons. If parents were only going to have one child, they preferred to have boys. See:

Regarding the low birthrate issue, to this day I still don't have much of an opinion about it as an outsider. But this video where a few native Japanese residents are interviewed about the matter does admittedly provide me some food-for-thought.

There is nothing inherent in such a system that skews the gender ratio but when that intersects with a patriarchal system and male children are valued more than female ones and you can only have one kid, of course more male children would survive. spoiler[To be specific they were usually either aborted or left on like a mountain to die. Yeah...]Here's one article I found but searching one child policy gender imbalance will generate a great deal more.

Damn. That kind of horror honestly didn't even cross my mind. Shocked

China's One-Child policy was notoriously awful. In addition to sex selective abortions, the government sometimes forced women to have abortion, and forced both men and women to be surgically sterilized. But, unfortunately, sex-selective abortion is popular in other developing countries with strong patriarchal cultures, like India and Pakistan, which also have a male-female gender imbalance in some areas. Sad
