... when he sees a girl naked, he turns into a powerful exorcising monk, maybe?

I was waiting for doujin work to come out so that's good but I couldn't care less about another harem series. It'll probably sell good though.

Neither of these shows are Strike Witches. Not cool, Media Blasters. Not cool.

Strike witches might be a little too much even for MB.

What is it with anime and manga just not giving a flying crap about religion when they use it as a shell upon their base their story on?

Isn't this sexual comedy rather insulting and detracting to the Buddhist faith? Not saying that it's totally bad, but it seems pretty oblivious to religion, something that seems common in Japan and in manga. They seem to not really understand religion or at least not too deeply. Many times manga uses it as window dressing or some generic mystical deus ex machina without bothering to fact check.

For example, as much as I enjoyed Chrono Crusade, I don't know where to begin on where they got Christianity wrong. In particular the total BS they made up about Mary Magdalene. (Then again the Catholic Church itself did for centuries declaring her a whole. This past century they somewhat changed their tune.) It wasn't any real religion, it was a pretty damn fictionalized version. Still enjoyed the series though, despite how wrong they were on the names they used.

anime creators do not make up the whole japanese population, so I'm not going to talk about Japan in general. And there are quite a few animes that treat religion, especially shintoism of course, in a non-insulting manner (ghibli movies, natsume ...).
I highly doubt Amaenaideyo was created to please real life Buddhists and to represent their religion faithfully, it's only a comedy-ecchi series. Most Japanese never even heard of this series and even less actually watched it ^^

Everybody has their own understanding of religion anyway. Manga and anime are for entertainment and it's fiction. Some authors will just take inspiration from religion to tell a nice story, without being real specialists. Especially since they're not too familiar with christianity some things are bound to be represented differently, but that also happens with things related to Japan, Shinto etc. in western fiction.

I'm pretty sure Japan has a decent grasp on Buddhism and Shinto, seeing how they've been in their country for a long time. They just seem like, as far as entertainment goes, they don't have to take themselves too seriously.

I actually didn't like Doujin Work that much, compared to other similar shows, but Amaenaideyo!! was great, fanservice-centered, mindless fun; with some good moments thrown in.

I'd compare it to Yumeria (from the same director), only instead of the guy "charging" the girls by fondling them, the girls "charge" the guy by flashing him. Good ol-fashioned oh-this-is-so-wrong ecchi guilty pleasure fun.

I'll go on the record now as saying ANN should just pretend that this show isn't coming out; it'll save them a bunch a grief from the eventual negative review. (although I don't know how much pushback they'll get from a little known show, even in the harem genre)

Makes sense, since Doujin Work fits the idea of being a title that doesn't really deserve a dub.

I could have sworn I saw John Sirabella mentioning that Doujin Works will be dubbed in AnimeOnDVD forums:

Wow, I never thought I'd never see AMAENAIDEYO! liscensced, especially since it seems that so few people have even heard of it and about 90% of those who have seen it seem to hate it. But it's one of my favorites and I'm happy to finally be able to get it legally. While it has a harem format I wouldn't say it's 100% a harem show since only one of the girls is interested in the main guy, and she only starts to seriously pursue him in the second season(KATSU) when a rival is introduced. I thought the character designs were great, especially the huge-eyebrows girl(I think her name was Sumi)--I like how anime can take a physical trait that would normally be considered unattractive and make it cute.

Didn't see this coming. This is a old one now. Didn't see that one coming. I watched some eps but eventually, lost interest. Not really into "harem" shows. Though I'll have check myself and see if there is one I liked. I think the only character I liked out was the silent one who had this droll look and had a demon for a pet.

Damn, there I was in the shower this morning thinking about the state of the anime industry and all the shows that have come and gone wondering if anyone will look their way and give them a chance, looking and hoping for a new license, and I come in and see "this" show got picked up. Actually 'Petopeto-san' was on my mind. Oh well.

Nice, glad to hear Doujin Works got a release date. The 19.99 price point also makes me happy, as I'm fine with watching it subbed (although if it used a combination of the American Genshiken and Comic Party cas that would be interesting to watch)

As a fan, I second this. That's really the point of this show, which is pretty original. The girls don't like him, except for the big-sister-type that teases him and the supposed love interest, who we know likes him, but she never admits it. He is not annoying at all, either. Exactly the opposite of the whiny/idiot/ahole dorks in shows like Girls Bravo, Chobits and Dears (which I do like regardless). I saw this early in my anime career and agree the animation was excellent and the comedy pretty good. Now if they can just translate it without trying to go PC on the religious aspect and humor.

Wow I must have been buying from bandai too much lately because I'm really surprised at the price... but then again I don't think I would be against giving up a little more for a dub Confused
