I watched the first dubbed episode of Divine Gate back when it was airing with a friend. Awful, awful, hilarious stuff. But the one line that had us both burst out in a fit of laughter was

'You go by the name of Santa Claus, and yet you show up with presents even when it's not the Holiday season!'

Like... OH GOD. That line. That is just terrible beyond belief.

I remember it got a lot of attention on Amazon Japan because of how god damn bad it was, but that obviously didn't translate into success because the show had absolutely abysmal disc sales. Still can't say I feel to bad for it failing though.

I'm also amazed that Funimation dubbed both Endride AND Divine Gate. I mean, not one but TWO hot garbage mobile game adaptations that have pretty much no chance of catching on in the west where you can't even play the damn things through normal means? Come on now. Still, Divine Gate was funny and it was only 12 episodes long so I'm a lot more forgiving.

I'm not sure what kept me around to finish out Divine Gate as a simuldub, but yeah, my consistent feeling from the show was that if there was an actual plot, I certainly wasn't seeing it. One thing I've noticed about some of the recent anime based on mobile games is that somebody must have told the director that a list of characters/factions needs to appear, even if it makes the story too busy or leaves those characters with about two minutes of screen time.

There are probably some reasons for that. Both shows predate the Crunchyroll partnership, so there was a certain amount of "take what they could get" going on, plus simuldubs were part of how Funimation differentiated itself from Crunchyroll, so chances are they were too far along before they realized how bad either of those shows would be.

On the plus side, at least the game for 18if is available here.

Kumamiko not getting a dub isn't too surprising considering it's a lot like Gingitsune, though with more humor (which isn't always that good). Too bad though since some scenes, like Natsu being a DJ, would be so sick in English. XD

This is actually one of the few series that I've dropped in recent years, and I like to think I'm fairly generous. I saw three episodes and just could not get into it, genuinely or ironically. My condolences to Gabriella for having to review such a thing.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who actually kinda liked Divine Gate!! I agree that the writing as abysmal at times, and one or two characters were annoying (pretty sure everyone hated Aoto!), but I find the concept of the series to be genuinely interesting! I also love Loki and Oz and the Norse/Scandinavian Gods. It's a shame why so many people hate the anime, but I understand why. Still, I've liked Divine Gate since I first saw it and it was always be a memorable anime to me Smile

I'd been playing the Divine Gate mobage for a fair while before the anime got announced. It didn't really strike me as a game with a strong plot, but I can't read enough Japanese to really know anyway.
I didn't bother watching the anime, though, but it seems that's a good thing.

As a side note, I really like the art style for Divine Gate, and they have some really nice crossover events.

If there's one saving grace in Divine Gate, it's that it has a great OP. The best OP of its season, actually, though it loses to Boku Dake's OP when you include the visuals for both.

same. and I also liked endride and chaos dragon as well. while all have flaws for sure their not completely unwatchable despite how the reviewer is making it as it seems. the problem with divine gate is that just like chaos dragon, it more or less NEEDS a second season to fix the flaws of the first one. or at least a movie adaptation ala Blood C-: The Last Dark which did just that.

other than that, both series aren't too bad. just incomplete.

if the reviewer really wants a series that is perishable, its kuromukuro.

A review of Divine Gate?
This is not going to go well.

I noted back when that if you have not seen a lot you probably could get attached to it, that you might even get some interest in. But it really did have some disaster elements.
