Since this is being announced now, that means the January 20th announcement is almost certainly an anime.

Or it could be something about the manga too, but considering it's the 30th anniversary and we got a 20th anniversary OVA I'm betting on a new anime.

Johnny & Associates' Naniwa Danshi band member Shunsuke Michieda is the fifth actor to play the titular detective Hajime Kindaichi, and this will be his first starring role in a live-action series.

This isn't his first starring role in a live action series, he was the lead in the popular, recently aired Kieta Hatsukoi/ My Love Mix-Up (which you even advertised here on ANN before it's premiere), Men's Kou, and several other shows with his fellow idols so I don't understand why this article got this information wrong. If you meant his first lead role without his Johnny's unit members I wish you had written that instead, instead of making it seem like his previous ones don't count since they were ~only~ idol shows - which would be particularly ironic for this series when it helped make idols into stars.

In any case, I'm very happy for Michieda's exciting new role! I hope it's well received and we can watch it outside of Japan Smile

I rather liked Neo, so I may keep an eye out for this, even though I do think switching to a new actor every season is a little weird. In about five years, you think they'll bring Yamada back for an adaptation of Kindaichi 37-sai?

If anyone would come back for an adaptation of Kindaichi 37-sai, it would be Kinki Kids' Doumoto (aka the first generation live-action Kindaichi). The author straight-out mentioned that he created the 37 yo Kindaichi character based on the actor, not to mention that Doumoto's Kindaichi remains the most beloved one among the Japanese public out of all five generations.

In any case, one interesting thing to note about this upcoming series is that it lists Kanari Yousaburou alongside Amagi Seimaru as the creators of the Kindaichi franchise, whereas Kanari's name wasn't listed on the credits lists for the third and fourth generation live-action series. For those who don't know, Kanari was one of the co-authors of the original manga series, and many of Kindaichi's earliest tricks and stories were supposedly his brainchild (including the infamous trick in the second File mystery that was outright plagiarized from Shimada Shouji's The Tokyo Zodiac Murders). Kanari supposedly fell out with the two other manga creators after the File manga series over copyright issues and was no longer listed on the credits beyond the Case manga series.

Kanari's name being listed this time round is significant because it possibly means that The Demon God Site Murders, otherwise known as the eighteenth File mystery, one for which the live-action adaptation has been long awaited, might finally get the spotlight in this series. Otherwise, it might also mean a number of popular File mysteries (Magical Express or Snow Yaksha Legend, for example) might get their live-action remakes.
