I skimmed around episode 1 and watched episode 2 and I don't really get the point of this adaptation when the previous one already exist. They have so much more time but they don't really seem to know what to use it for so they just slow everything down (and start with a first episode that doesn't have any of the fun stuff in the series). On its own its decent, but it just feel like a pale imitation when compared with the shorts.

Thermae Romae is one of those weird concepts you could only really get away with in the world of anime and manga,

This sounds a little weird when you consider that they did make two live action movies from it. Live action movies based on comics are not that unusual anywhere these days. Some of the same gags show up in each adaptation, understandably.

Hiroshi Abe did a good job with the role of Lucius. (I wonder how many decades and how much more immigration to Japan it will take until people freak out about that sort of the thing the way that Americans do now.)

Been a while since I read it so does this version have some original anime content (besides Yamazaki’s excursion docs) or just plain adaptation of the original manga chapters?

As someone unfamiliar with the source material, I found the pacing to be great. I never felt like episodes dragged on too long and never got a "Gee, it feels like they're really padding this" vibe. The first episode was admittedly weak, but I had no issue with anything else.

TBH, I would have watched a series about Yamazaki's travels. I honestly thought that was the most interesting part of the show. Gave me some ideas of where to go when (..if..) Japan decides it wants to open to international tourism again.

I didn't know about the onsen tamago or being able to drink the onsen water (from a separate area, but still..it never occurred to me when visiting). It also never occurred to me that the Sulphur from many natural onsen was packed up and sold so that you could add it to your bath at home.

I made the huge mistake of buying Discotek's dvd set of the 1st series which I hated and I hate this new series even more.

The live-action films are actually pretty good.

Thinking about Thermae Romae made me want more Extra Olympia Kyklos, and I only just now realised they’re both from he same writer. I’d previously assumed Extra Olympia Kyklos was just a crazier, even-more-comedy-focused imitation.
