From January to December of last year, he allegedly sold copied DVDs to over a thousand people for a profit of 9,500,000 yen (about US$83,000).

This should be at the top of the article, insted of the bottom. I mean 31 sounds like college levels. But the thousands of copies is the big time.

Heh - those wold have sold here in the US for $5 to $10 per series for DVD copies...

But it underscores my general point - if the DVDs are available, you should be selling the legal DVDs and not making copies of anything. And fansubs should never be sold.

Fansub is just as illegal as copying dvd. Fansub is a copy of a show and is given free.

To anyone that thinks nobody actually makes money off selling anime bootlegs, well, there you go. Even though the prices are higher than what domestic bootlegs sell for, keep in mind that this is just one person working alone. Think about all of the bootleg retailers just in the US selling both online and offline, the numbers add up very quickly.

Where you buying from? Maybe E-bay
But the 2 shops here selling bootlegs sell about $25 for 13 eps & $40 for 26 ep series. Movies are about $15.

Heh, I've see worse.
Some sell fansubs they downloaded and people actually buy the stuff.
Even if they see the "not for sale", they keep coming back.

Japan is the worst place to sell bootlegs, a single dvd cost 50.00 and a full set cost 220.00 where you can get hk bootlegs of the same shows for 9.00 and 25.00 and the benefit of the japanese is that they never complain for the bad engrish of the subs.

is their market, if you gonna sell bootlegs or drugs...the same punishment will come for you for the same crimes.

Why is it that DVDs are so expensive in Japan?

I remember hearing about some government imposed regulation over the DVD format or something, but I can't recall any specifics.

Am I the only one amused by the fact that he's a used-car salesman?

"Come on down to Discount Rob's Used Car and Bootleg Anime Emporium! These deals are so crazy, they're ILLEGAL!"

LOL! That was awesome.

It's good to see more crackdowns on these types of things.
