Manga Artist Has Awkward Experience at Family Restaurant

Partakes in Girls und Panzer campaign

While we may be aware of how awesome anime is, it can be hard to forget that for most people, it's a bizarre and abstruse medium. Despite the existence of big anime-centered neighborhoods like Tokyo's Akihabara and Osaka's Den-Den Town, this holds true in Japan as well. Erotic manga artist Tsukasa Hijiri realized this recently while eating at the family restaurant Coco's and drew a quick webcomic about his experience.

Coco's is currently promoting Girls und Panzer with a theme menu and prizes for patrons. Hijiri is participating by visiting each week to get a new clear file each time. This week, though, he sits next to a group of women, one of whom calls Girls und Panzer "your name. with tanks." As if that wasn't painful enough, her neighbor frets about "crazies who love anime girls" coming. Then they unexpectedly meet another woman and tell her about the "your name. collaboration" because she's a fan. "That's not your name., it's for otaku who love anime more," she says. "But they look the same!"

Just when Hijiri thinks he's "in hell," the waiter comes with his order. There is an awkward silence as the women realize who their neighbor is, then they abruptly say their goodbyes. "I want to go home," sobs the artist. On Twitter, he compared the your name./Girls und Panzer confusion with assuming all games are Famicom. Not that this experience will stop him from finishing his collection, mind you: he'll just try to avoid afternoon in the future since "wives" tend to visit Coco's then.

If you have a painful, awkward, embarrassing, or (especially) hilarious story about bad misconceptions about anime or encounters with people who Just Don't Get It, we'd love to hear it in the forums!
