Nintendo game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto (Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 64, Pikmin) is working with a Japanese studio to create more Pikmin animated shorts. An animated clip already appeared last year's E3, and Nintendo began showing a short in Toho Cinemas theaters to remind filmgoers of proper etiquette and manners.
Shigeru revealed in an interview with Polygon that Nintendo aims to release the shorts this year prior to Pikmen 3. "They'll be released sometime before the release of Pikmin 3," Miyamoto said. "Possibly as a Nintendo video. If they're popular we could consider selling them."
Miyamoto stated that instead of licensing the characters to another studio, he decided to direct them himself. "I didn't want to license our characters out to someone else to create films," he said. "Instead, since I used to draw four-panel comics when I was younger, I thought it would be fun to bring a four-panel comic approach to creating video content, so we started work on these Pikmin videos.
Miyamoto previewed the first short on a Nintendo 3DS XL for Polygon's staff. The animated clip features Olimar making a smoothie out of what appears to be the Pikmin, but it is revealed that it is actually carrots.
