Hayao Miyazaki's Films Rise in TV, Box Office, DVD Rankings

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Friday's re-airing of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's 1992 anime film Porco Rosso on Japan's NTV channel earned a 16.0% rating. The film's re-airing came on the heels of Miyazaki's retirement press conference, and it replaced a scheduled airing of X-Men Origins: Wolverine with less than a week's notice. It is the 10th time the film has been broadcast on television in Japan, but the latest airing topped the 15% rating it earned in a past rerun. (The film's highest rating was still from its first airing in 1993, at 20.9%.)

The Wind Rises just completed its eighth straight weekend at the top of the Japanese box office. According to journalist Hiroo Otaka, it made 455,760,000 yen (about US$4.57 million) this past weekend for a collective total of about 9,773,190,000 yen (US$97.5 million). This past weekend's box office receipts were a huge jump from the previous weekend, with 34.5% higher sales. While Sports Hochi reports that the film was already certain to surpass the 10-billion-yen (US$100 million) box office take of 2010's Toy Story 3, it is possible that it will top 15 billion yen (US$150 million) like Miyazaki's last film, Ponyo.

Oricon reported that nine of Miyazaki's works had made it into the top 100 DVD rankings for the September 2-8 week. My Neighbor Totoro went from 49th to 9th, Spirited Away went from 149th to 27th, Kiki's Delivery Service went from 91st to 28th, Princess Mononoke went from 115th to 31st, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind went from 189th to 34th, Castle in the Sky went from 125th to 39th, Porco Rosso went from 228th to 43rd, and Ponyo went from 284th to 85th. Lastly, Howl's Moving Castle, which was not previously ranked, jumped to 95th.

Porco Rosso also rose from 82nd to 36th on the Blu-ray Disc rankings, while My Neighbor Totoro rose from 105th to 47th. In all, the Blu-ray Discs for six Miyazaki films ranked in the top 100.
