1st book in planned line of Japanese comics to debut on July 1

British publisher Breakdown Press announced on Thursday that it will release Seiichi Hayashi's Flowering Harbour at The Japan Foundation in London on July 1. Hayashi and manga expert and academic Ryan Holmberg will be present at the event and a listening party the following day. The book will then go on sale in Breakdown Press' online store.

The company describes the story:

Flowering Harbour is a love story filtered through the aesthetics of enka music, known informally as “Japanese blues."

The book has not previously been released in English. Hayashi wrote a new introduction for the release. The company noted that Holmberg will continue working with Breakdown Press on "on a series of translations of classic and avant garde Japanese comics."

Publisher Drawn & Quarterly released Hayashi's Red Colored Elegy manga and PictureBox will release his Gold Pollen and Other Stories this fall.
