Shueisha's V Jump channel on YouTube began streaming a promotional video for Square-Enix's Dragon Quest Heroes: Yamiryū to Sekai Ki no Shiro (Dragon Quest Heroes: The Darkness Dragon & the Castle of the World Tree) PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 game on Friday. The video focuses on the gameplay of the demonic swordsman Psaro (as voiced by Daisuke Ono), but also goes over combat and the mechanics of the game.

Additionally, Square-Enix's official blog announced the "Rare Item Campaign" for those who bought the game. During this campaign, players who sign in through PSN on May 7 at 12 p.m till May 8 at 12 a.m can double their chances of receiving a rare item after defeating a monster.

Square-Enix shipped the game in Japan on February 26, 2015. The PlayStation 4 version costs 7,800 yen (about US$77), while the PlayStation 3 version costs 6,800 yen (about US$67). The limited edition Dragon Quest Metal Slime Edition PlayStation 4 was released on December 11 in limited quantities for the price of 49,980 yen (about US$499).

The game was developed in collaboration with Koei Tecmo Games' Omega Force team, which also developed the Warriors series of games. (However, Dragon Quest IX producer Ryūtarō Ichimura confirmed with fans on Twitter that the game will not be a Warriors title.) In addition to being the first action RPG in the Dragon Quest series, the game was also the first title in the series in ten years to be released on a PlayStation system. Yuji Horii served as the general director of the game, and Kōichi Sugiyama composed the soundtrack.

The story takes place in the kingdom of of Elsarze, where humans and monsters work hand in hand, and everything is peaceful. However, one day, the monsters turn violent, and begin attacking the humans. Captains of the Imperial Guards Akt and Mare stand up in order to bring back the original hearts of the monsters, and bring peace back to Elsarze once more.
