Episode 1142 of One Piece is a cavalcade of momentous milestones that increase the stakes without altogether moving the plot that much further ahead.

I think it's fair to say that both everything happens and nothing happens in this week's One Piece. The major events are clear enough: the Giants of Elbaph make landfall, the Pacifistas continue to thwart the Navy, and Vegapunk at last passes into that sweet night. There's no shortage of happenings to update wikis with, and ask yourself, “Where were you when you saw x happen” in the future. At the same time, the fundamentals of the situation haven't drastically changed. Vegapunk was nearly dead last episode and had little to no hope of surviving. Therefore, this serves more as punctuation than anything. The giants were already approaching and causing a lot of havoc on the way in; now they've simply come ashore. And the fight between Luffy, Borsalino, and Saturn had not fully resumed last week, and doesn't really go anywhere this week either.

It's certainly a curious mixture.

On the whole, it is quite positive. Vegapunk's passing represents an interesting bookend to a very long journey. Vegapunk is a character of nearly mythic status in the world of One Piece, probably in the top five of most important characters from a world-building perspective. He has been a huge mover and shaker in the establishment of the World Government's power, yet has only been a name for literal decades. At this point, we have not only met him but parted ways with him, marking the end of a strange and mysterious journey of discovery. I don't know if anyone could have predicted all the twists and turns he has taken us or the Straw Hats on - and given that his recorded messages are starting now that he has passed, he still isn't done with us yet - but it is a weighty moment now that he has exited stage left.

This episode mostly looks quite good, even if not a lot is happening. The Pacifistas blasting on the shoreline is one of the more exciting and certainly the most densely packed in action and effects. But there are fun moments like Vice Admiral Doll's coolest-lady-ever approach to the island, where she lights up a cigarette. That's all I needed to enjoy the episode personally, and I know that I'm not alone on that front.
