Well, I'm completely at a loss why a registration step is required from a website I don't frequent when ANN is giving away the goods.

I think it's perfectly reasonable for MangaGamer to ask for registration in exchange for your entry.

Your familiar with the term "no purchase necessary," right ? Well in this case "Registration at MangaGamer.com necessary."

Likewise, it's perfectly reasonable for you to decide that registration isn't worth it for you. What's rather unreasonable is to act like there's something inherently wrong with there being conditions on the way stuff is given out for free.

MangaGamer.com has given Anime News Network five (5) sets of the Higurashi: When They Cry PC game to give-away.

Given? "We'll give you these if you tell people to sign up to our site."
Sold!

Why would we turn down the opportunity to give our readers free stuff? It's not like we're forcing anyone to enter.

Wait a minute, now I'm seeing that there's a MangaGamer username field now. I registered before that was put there. Do those of us who did so need to register for this again? I'd hate to be excluded because of a change in the submission requirements. Razz

Ditto this ... gosh, get it together, folks.

If people needed to re-enter we would have made an announcement about it.

We removed the user id# field as soon as it became clear that there was some confusion. We replaced it with the username field as soon as everything was cleared up with MangaGamer. People who entered in the meantime will still be eligible to win (MangaGamer will figure out their username from their e-mail address).

It's together.

I definitely come from the cautious side of submitting information and it's very helpful you've confirmed my fears are unwarranted in this regard.
Thanks.

Regretably, I registered earlier this year to buy Kira Kira (excellent, really top notch for me as far as visual novel enjoyability) , and a few other titles including Shuffle, and am thus denied the shot at a free chance at another sure fire purchase from them in Higurashi.

I have noticed no increase outside of a few newsletters from them.

Good to see them reach out to ANN, though I wonder how the titles of their two previous releases will go over with the ANN crowd, a bit stout even for me.

Cool stuff, thanks for letting us know. I had a hunch that was what MangaGamer would do, but just wanted to make sure. Smile

Good luck to everyone who entered!

We expect to walk into McDonalds to play its Monopoly game with purchasing food* but we certainly don't expect to go to Burger King to register to play the game at McDonalds.

If this seems unreasonable acting to you, then we're clearly not going to agree on this form of registration for an ANN contest in which they're giving away the product.

I'm sorry we don't see eye-to-eye on this very unique contest give-away registration process, but I'm okay with having to turn down since I don't agree with it.

The chances of me winning, based on previous entries, was slim-to-none anyway.

*though not required by law, noting, registration is not considered a "purchase" just in case some want to cross this line.

A G rated version of Higurashi sounds absolutely terriable and a complete dishonor to the actual series.

Its pretty obvious, but Higurashi isn't a G rated, wholesome family show. There is gore, high amounts of violence, swearing and otherwise elements that aren't G rated.

Granted the second season is lighter, that doesn't mean the gore or violence is gone.

But that site had some pretty interesting games with characters that were 18 years or older. As long as they are 18 and its consentual, uncensored and uncut is the way to go with these types of games.

Think you are misunderstanding something. Higurashi isn't being censored at all, the "all ages" rating is not by any official ratings group, but rather to say it is not 18+ with hentai content. This is likely directly linked to the common practice in Japan, where all non adult versions of games, regardless of how bloody they may be, are called the "all age" version.

As to their other games, having played some of them myself I will say that some of them are quite good. KiraKira is in my opinion the second best visual novel to be commercially released in English to date (best being Ever17), which they have a trial of on their website (which contains a significant part of the beginning of the game, hours worth).

I have not heard anything about Mangagamer editing anything in Higurashi, I think they just decided that it was appropriate for all ages? In the end, it's still pretty much like a book, you can't exactly look at it in terms of how you would evaluate a movie or anime.

If you're familiar with 07thExpansion artwork, all the gore suddenly becomes trivial. Well, I guess they still happen and the writing is still there, I suppose that's still explicit. Their other games are pretty good too, if you don't mind a quirky sounding translation now and again. Their older releases are more guilty of that though.

Don't get me started on that censoring issue though. Lots of fans are up in arms over their decision to remove CGs from Soul Link, one of their upcoming releases. If you look at their logic stated, one has to wonder how butchered Koihime Musou, one of their other projects, will turn out. Both of these are still up in the air at the moment, but I do hope they do the right thing and choose not to censor their upcoming titles. Should they choose to do so, I'm not sure I will be able to support them anymore, I stand with the large majority of fans on this one.

Glad to see someone recognize this. While Ever17 has holes you could drive a bus through, it does not diminish what a great VN experience it is.

Kira Kira would be an anime if not for Beck and K-On, and it still should probably get an anime series. Just a fun story, that could survive without the H content.

To the person who was misinformed thinking all age = censored, here is some conformation that Higurashi will be completely uncensored (and to those who care, Soul Link will also be uncensored)

After a lengthy and heated discussion, we have decided to release Soul Link and Higurashi uncensored with all CGs intact.

For Japanese PC games, "All Ages" is pretty much a way of saying "Not 18+".

If I'm not mistaken, their domestic rating systems feature the 15+ classification. However, it's rarely used in comparison because the main purpose of those boards is to mark pornographic content.

Originally, winners were supposed to be named yesterday (the 15th). Any word when this will happen?

Sounds unlikely that they may have forgotten. Perhaps there are certain things to iron out before distributing the downloading rights to the winners?

Yeah, I doubt they've forgotten, either. Would be nice if we at least got an explanation for the delay but that doesn't seem to be forthcoming either.
