Is it possible to direct download this with a Japanese PSN account? I know I've managed to do game demos before and I wasn't sure if you can actually make purchases as well.

Yes, you can direct download from JP PSN. You just need a JP PSN card to add money (Since PSN doesn't accept credit cards from foreign bank accounts).

I was actually wondering, all the characters so far have come from novels from the same publishing company right? What exactly is Valkyria Chronicles's connection?

Also you can just import the game with Play Asia. Much simpler than going through the process of making a Japanese account and buying Japanese network cards. Just play the game on your (insert country here) account.

The connection is the developer and publisher of this game: Sega. That's why Akira from Virtua Fighter is in the game, as well as a stage based on Sonic.
