For some reason I got the impression MREs were prepared by opening them, rather than heating or anything like that.

What I can safely contribute to this discussion is that, at least in Vietnam, GIs would use C4 as firewood. I'm pretty sure it's rarely done these days due to soldiers wanting to not get cancer(well, that and being professionals rather than conscripts; the former are also significantly less likely to play not-so-friendly games of catch with their officers).
