See you space cowboy. I am sure that you will appreciate a JoJo sendoff. Buried Treasure/Garbage and House of 1000 manga departed too soon and I am now left with only the seasonal preview section and the news to keep me around. Unless the followup to this turns out to be a winner and an anime year with Vinland Sage in it is hardly a write-off. Even if the scene had a brush with mass murder of all things. You can´t let yourself be kept down by thoughts about such matters though Kyle. The bad guys will win otherwise and this is hardly the worst year for the anime/manga industry or even the worst year in modern human history. Humanity survived the year of our lord 2001 and we´ll survive 2019. |

Thanks so much! My hiatus from anime fandom ended right around the time you began writing Answerman, and the column has been an invaluable tool for getting reacquainted with the state of the industry!

Thanks for six great years of good questions and great answers! (And even more so for your patience with us for the not-quite-comprehensible, already-answered, and otherwise problematic queries!
 ) It was the only column on ANN that I regularly searched out, aside from the previous incarnation of Shelf Life. And in days of yore, Buried Treasure/Garbage was always a blast! You will be missed!
As for the anime scene in 2019... First, the KyoAni fire shattered all of us. I was knocked on my pins for weeks, and I'm still trying to find the right words. A donation to Sentai's GoFundMe was my way of coping, as was (re)watching all their catalog sitting on my shelf. That, and sharing Violet Evergarden with the missus. As for toxic fandom, I've somehow avoided it all these years. Anime Boston has been my con of choice since its beginning in 2003, and it's still the highlight of my year. Aside from one totally obnoxious and out-of-control individual from its first year (who was escorted away), I've yet to have a truly unpleasant encounter in all these 17 events. Strident, sure, emphatic, yes, passionate, certainly--but toxic, never. 95% or more of the time, my interactions at AB have been enlightening and silly and good-natured and just plain fun--and not just with fellow fans, but also con guests and staff. Same goes for southern New Hampshire's Another Anime Con: my fondest memory there was watching dozens of fans and vendors spontaneously cutting loose with a rocking (and slightly off-key) rendition of the Pokemon theme in the dealers room. Online, I pretty much restrict my presence to the AB and ANN forums which, by and large, are civil and thoughtful, though a bit testy from time to time. So where is this "toxic content" found, exactly? I'm not being facetious; I really don't know! (And yes, I can be that clueless.  )
Bottom line, I'm both happy and more than a little proud to be part of this fandom. It's the only place I know personally where a middle-aged guy can go to an event or log on to a forum and feel at ease with folks half my age and younger, and find mutual respect and acceptance as peers. It's a great place to be. But reading some of these other posts, I have to ask if I'm blind or just plain lucky. |

Yeah, I know I'm late to the party, but I only check the ANN site every couple of months or so. Answerman became pretty much the only part of ANN I checked out with any regularity.
I believed the end was coming at some point. There were only so many questions left to ask. It IS a shame that fandom, whether it be from anime, comics, or games has been infiltrated by narcissistic a-holes looking to stir up trouble. Conventions and gatherings are supposed to be fun and an escape from the troubles of the real world, not something that has to be invaded by sh!t-stirrers! I haven't attended a convention in about nine years, not so much because of drama and the like (which was almost non-existent then), but because j-pop/rock acts and cosplayers were taking over anime conventions. Not that there's anything wrong with those, but why call it an anime convention? Same goes for comic cons; comic books are taking a back seat to movie/TV stars, wrestlers, and, of course, cosplayers. What's the point? At least I don't have to spend money on registration, travel, hotel, food, etc. just to be disappointed. Anyway, rant over. As I approach 60 years of age and having been a fan of Anime staring in the early 70's I feel your pain. People have changed over the decades and many have only a passing love of the media while others are so addicted they are almost scary. Like many, I started anime because it was so different from all the other media that was available. Through the years I have endured some truly horrible anime while occasionally stumbling upon true gems. Like many, I am frustrated with the younger gen that is watching. But having said that I wonder if we were part of this generation would we really be that much different.
When I was a child we did not have cable tv, computers, cell phones, or microwaves. we had black and white tv (color was so cool when it came out) we lived in a different generation with a different background than the current one. Think of how much easier it is for them to find this media. pick up your phone and you can google the answer in a heartbeat. if people are talking about anything you can get up to speed in a few moments. LOL, I still remember Video Taping episodes of Star Blazers on Saturday mornings to share with my friends who did not have access to the same TV stations that I did. The fun we would have as we gathered to watch a series and try to guess what was coming next. Granit this new group has much more to work with and is much more demanding than we were. and with so much more content covering so many more genres than it has ever been they have a banquet of choices to watch. I miss the old days and occasionally get in touch with my old friends to laugh at how much fun it used to be. Yet this younger generation is so much fun. I enjoy teaching them about the older series that they are clueless about. And I will admit that it is fun to watch them get excited and start talking about how much they enjoyed one of my recommended old series. This I believe is the role that people like myself have in this anime/manga world today. Share our gems and point the new generation toward the best that the industry has to offer. This is our legacy to them and our gift to any who follow. I hope you enjoy the peace of this break from Answerman and have fun with your many projects. |
