The answerfans questions is a really good one, it provoked a bit thought in me.

I guess it makes me ask the followup question, how is my anime fandom any different than any other fandom? (How generally socially acceptable it is is the quick answer I found myself answering.)

How is my wearing a Bleach t-shirt in public any different than wearing a officially licensed professional sports jersey? I could keep up with an anime discussion with a group of my fandom peers, is that any different than a group of people who could talk NFL trivia and stats? Or maybe the group of people who stand around the office water cooler talking about the latest plot developments of "Lost" or "Heroes"? Not to mention interests such as Star Wars, Star Trek or Harry Potter, which all carry their own followings.

I guess I would treat such subjects similarly. Talking to people about our interests in common. And 99% of the time that does not include anime. So maybe it is not so much an issue of hiding my fandom, but more of keeping it to myself because no one around me really cares.

Living in a youth controlled by 'in-things' such as Rap, R&B and all those other cliched nightmares were hard for me to deal with in the first place, being the rock-loving person I am. However, one thing that ruined my chances of being popular during my school days was somebody found out I like anime, and spread it around.

Josh Stevens, my male counterpart. I grew up in an area if you didn't like rap or R&B or even the latest Jordans you were an outcast. Most people didn't know what anime was except Pokemon so it wasn't something they could make fun of. Liking Rock or pop however and not dressing like in (insert black clothing trend here) was the thing for me.

Anyway, I'm not a closet fan at all. I'm not a super maniac in public either. At work I'm just mild mannered stockroomer Ms. G. On the internet, at cons and with friends I'm super anime fan Viga! Yes I might be reading manga on the metro or watching anime with my roomie on the metro. If the conversation came up I would be like, "Yeah, I love anime, I go to cons and do stuff at them!" Otherwise, I don't ram it into people faces every chance I get. In public I am the middle fan on answerfan said. Visible fandom, but not OMGZ NARUTOZ LOOK AT MY HEADBANDZ nor I hide it because I'm scared.

I'm pretty amazed that people go to such lengths as to hide their anime and manga in their own homes, or be afraid that someone see them browsing ANN in order to not be perceived as an anime fan. I don't walk around advertising my anime fandom with apparel, mainly because I haven't really seen any anime t-shirts that I particularly liked, and I don't really need a 4th black t-shirt. When I worked at a place where people had all sorts of funny things on their desks (and an open and fun company culture), I had no problem putting up my Gundam models or leaving my anime OST's lying around.

What's up with this anime fan stereotype of non-anime fans that assumes non-anime fans think anime is "porno cartoons?" I've never met anyone like this. People I've met tend to either not know what anime is or just associate it with what their kids watch (Pokemon, Bleach, Naruto). The only time I got annoyed about a stereotype was when I told some guy Gundam SEED was my favorite show and he thought Gundam SEED was just another super robot show, as opposed to the "realistic" robot show it actually is.

My feelings excactly- why bore the people around me?

I have been talking about anime 'publicly' lately, due to some bizarre twist of fate in my co-workers over the last year. Would've thought a craft store would pull in so many anime fans as employees? Laughing

I say "Japanese animation" or "Japanese cartoons" instead of anime. It sounds more 'art house', if you will, so it avoids the brain's stereotyped Pokemon n' porn tie-in for those who don't know better, while leaving an opening for other fans to say "Oh, I watch anime too!" It's worked well for me so far. Wink

I don't hide my anime fandom, as in living in fear that I get ridiculed by it. There are too many people that I know that are anime fans anyway, so there is no need to hide it. I don't wear things though that clearly state that I am an anime fan, but if there's people talking about anime whom I don't know, there is a more than likely chance that I will engage in discussion with them.

Yeah, really. I've been waiting for an opportunity at work for a "What'd you do this weekend?" discussion where I randomly bring up watching Gundam SEED and how great it is and watch people get confused. Hey if they can talk about "HAY HOW'D THAT TEAM I'M NOT ON DO IN THE FOOZEBALL" I can randomly bring up Gundam just to amuse myself.

You might be surprised then to hear it happens elsewhere. I work at Toys R Us, and out of the 30 or so employees there, about 6 of them are anime fans. Granted, one started becoming a fan after another loaned him some DVDs, but still an impressive number. But yeah, it is such an awesome way to hang with anime fans (it's a part of your job! Very Happy ).

However, as for the "bore people" part, well, I could respect that, if THEY did as well. I really don't care about watching sports (actually playing them is fun though), but some people I know won't care, they'll just talk endlessly about some game. So if someone asks me what I'm into or what I did this weekend, I'll tell them. They asked, and they're vocal about things I'm not that interested in, so it seems fair to me.

Gunsmith Cats would probably be the easiest anime to adapt. Girls, guns, cars, action, hell, it even takes place in Chicago, iirc!

Another good fit would be any sports anime, preferably Eyeshield 21, Touch, or Ookiku Furikabutte. Eyeshield in particular would be interesting to see, especially with all the assorted personalities on each team. I'm afraid the movie would over-emphasize Sena's growth and limit the team's growth, especially considering film time limits (No more goddamn Titanics, thank you...).

(Off-topic: Yawara has made me appreciate the older styles of storytelling in anime.)

One more good fit: Ranma 1/2 as an action romcom. As long as they don't CG the animals. Cats/pigs talking with human lip flaps is a most disturbing sight...

I personally would love to see either FMP or Infinite Ryvius (Emo teens sell...) adapted, but it would probably end up too CG heavy and all the humans would look out of place. Maybe Fumoffu?

Ain't the Twilight release coming down the corner? Let's throw Vampire Knight in there as well, so I can hiss and boo twice as hard whenever I hear Hellsing and either one of those abominations together in the same sentence.

And since DB and Avatar are in production, why not try for Naruto? I'm sure there's some hyperactive blond kid somewhere out there just waiting to annoy us all on the big screen...

That's what I was thinking of too. It doesn't go all out with special effects or anything too wild, so it could be done without all the added stress.[/quote]

i'd like to see a mecha flick live action. i cant even recall anything they put out post-Robot Jox. sure, an Eva movie was considered... but i've given up hope on that end.

i let my hobby be known because it starts conversations with like-minded individuals. a cellphone strap here, a hoodie there; many of my current friends i would not have met were it not for letting my interests be known. if people want to shame me for watching animated shows (which can't be anything but 'kid stuff'), then i let them. if they ever bring it up in front of me, i have plenty of ways to make a fool of them.

That would be a bit disturbing but how you would handle the whole thing with spoiler[Ranma going from male to female?] That's what I would like to know. They could probably do it however, spoiler[it would probably be changed that Ranma doesn't change genders with cold or hot water, but then the film would be ruined no matter how good it turned out otherwise.]

Well, it's your lucky day! There is a Monster movie planned for release next year. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0469469/ Let's just keep our fingers crossed that it turns out well.
As for other anime that I think would work well to live action, Gunsmith Cats is a given. It's already set in Chicago, and it's got guns, car chases, and hot girls. Maybe just tweak Minnie May's character a bit, and it would be perfect.
Peach Girl could work well as a live action show aimed for teen girls. It's just packed with so much drama, and American writers could have a lot of fun with Sae's character - she's so much fun to hate, and I think that they could just up her evil factor so much more. Shows for teens are full of smarmy, spoiled, snotty brats, and who's more smarmy, spoiled, snotty and bratty than Sae?

As for my anime fandom, I don't bother to hide it. If people at work know that I like knitting, boxing, horror movies, and cooking, then why can't they know that I like anime as well? I just don't talk about it to people who don't like it. Easy.
Someone else mentioned that they won't tell potential girlfriends/boyfriends about it, which, to me, makes no sense. What's the point of being with someone if you can't let them see who you are - hobbies and interests included?

It all ties into the whole "cartoons are for kids"/"anime is all Pokémon or porn"/"anime is nerdy and repels women" thing. Upon looking through a thread of a recent Shelf Life column, I came across someone who mentioned something about forced garage sales and one party in the relationship leaving just because of anime fandom.

As for me, I'm way too wrapped up in anime to even bother dating. (I already watch up to 20 or more shows at once, and over the past year I've averaged about 15 animes a month, so why date women?)

haha, so about half of the movie would be of them transforming into their gowns, THEN into their fighting outfits? x3 (The only part of the show that irked me, sadly...)

And yes. Shannon Hale very much for the win... I have almost all of her books ^^
