To Your Eternity's Third Season Premiere Shows the Series Still Has It

The early afternoon crowd of fans quickly spilled into the Sakura Stage panel for a glimpse of the highly anticipated first episode of To Your Eternity Season 3. Set for an official launch in October 2025, the third season of Yoshitoki Ōima's beloved series promises consistent storytelling, pacing, and animation compared to the previous two seasons. After a nearly two-and-a-half-year gap since the end of season two, To Your Eternity turns a new chapter in Fushi's journey. Fans welcomed voice actors Reiji Kawashima (voice of Fushi) and Tsuda Kenjiro (voice of the Beholder) as they made their first US convention appearance. This panel report will have some spoilers for the previous two seasons as well as the upcoming season.

Before transitioning to the episode premiere, Kawashima and Tsuda had a brief Q&A about their time in New York City and took recommendations for what Broadway shows they should see. Then, they went into their experience performing as their character. Kawashima shared that he had over sixteen notebooks, drawing and writing about the characters, back when he started recording for To Your Eternity. “Playing alongside veterans like Tsuda-san, the only thing I could do is spend time practicing and studying.”

As a surprise announcement to those at the panel, the speakers announced that Perfume would be performing the new opening theme song for the third season. Like Fushi's immortality, Hikaru Utada's purposefully endless, looping song was the embodiment of the series. The shift away from Hikaru's sentimental “Pink Blood” to a potentially techno or synthpop track–one of the genres Perfume is best known for–signals a change in the story's tone and environment. Tsuda chimed in with his excitement prior to a ten-minute clip from the upcoming The Roots of To Your Eternity Documentary and new season debut. “From a long time ago, I've really liked Perfume as well as Yasutaka Nakata, so I'm looking forward to it.”

Similar to the previous seasons, the episode begins with a brief recap of events from the second season. After the season finale's tumultuous and emotional conclusion, Fushi has seemingly ended the threat of the Nokkers, for now. New, yet familiar, young faces grace the screen as the world of To Your Eternity transitions from a medieval setting to a modern cityscape. The initial atmosphere is lighthearted as the audience is introduced to a group of spirited schoolchildren going about their day, though there's a slight sense of unease as a girl named Mizuha takes the stage. Even for anime-only viewers, it's instantly obvious when a character contains Hayase's dominant physical traits.

Shifting back to Fushi, who has awakened from his slumber into a new world, he takes these technological advances and changes in stride. While enjoying and taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of city life, like boba milk tea, his companions are spread in various areas far away from him. Unfortunately, Fushi's reawakening wasn't into a peaceful world that he had imagined, as he spiraled into an existential crisis after seeing March happily bonded with a family. Once he overcomes his internal struggles, channeling out his mental anguish as a fish, Fushi develops a new connection to a young boy and his family after he's fished out of the water.

The cheerful and comedic beats of the first episode land perfectly, as Fushi remains the same complex character he was before, but now he faces new challenges. Great care was taken in the coloring, background design, and music composition, despite the series entering its third season. The animation remains consistent with the high-quality fans are accustomed to, and the story pacing is easy to follow, even for fair-weather or lapsed fans. To Your Eternity's production remains impressive, even for an anime title that has been running since 2021. Having moved away from the physical challenges and attacks from Nokkers, Fushi will be fighting a different uphill battle filled with emotionally charged philosophical questions between life and death.

The Roots of To Your Eternity Documentary premieres on Crunchyroll August 29 and season three is set to debut in October 2025.
