Evangelion: Death & Rebirth Film Returns to Box Office Top 10, 28 Years Later
posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
The Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth anime film began playing in 90 theaters in Japan again last Friday as part of the Evangelion franchise's 30th anniversary celebration. It sold 72,653 tickets for 118,838,800 yen (about US$786,000) over the long October 10-13 long weekend. (Monday, October 13 was the Sports Day holiday in Japan.) The film ranked #10 for the October 10-12 weekend in Japan, in terms of the raw amount of yen earned. (It ranked #11 that same weekend in Japan, in terms of the raw number of tickets sold.)

The Tsuki-Ichi Eva Evangelion 30th Movie Fest.2025-2026 event is screening one film from the Evangelion franchise every month from October 2025 to February 2026 (though October will have two films) in theaters throughout Japan. Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth screens on October 10-16, followed by The End of Evangelion on October 24-30, Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone on November 14-20, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance on December 12-18, Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo on January 9-15 (alongside a theatrical version of the Evangelion: 3.0 [-46h] OVA, and a motion comic version of the Evangelion 3.0 (-120 min.) manga), and Evangelion: 3.0+1.01: Thrice Upon A Time on December 13-19.
Due to the success of Death & Rebirth's return to theaters so far, some of the theaters are extending its current run beyond October 16.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth was partially a compilation film of the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series that opened in Japan in March 1997. The "Death" segment of the film retells and condenses the story of the anime series, with retouched scenes, some added scenes, and linking scenes featuring the main characters in a string quartet. The "Rebirth" segment of the film overlaps with the begining of The End of Evangelion, though some scenes ended up having different editing or being redrawn for the latter film. The "Death" segment is notable for having three total edit versions, with version shown in the ongoing anniversary film screenings being the third and final "Death (True)²" version.
