Well, it's good to know that even our reviewer doesn't seem to use the encyclopedia*
I really should watch the DVD's I bought and not just live on what I saw of SP in club. ^^; *Look at Scrapped's trivia section. |

The dialogue script is beginning to show its weakness. I find it completely jarring when Elizabethan mechanics and phrasing is mixed with our modern vernacular. It was necessary for me to return to the Japanese dialogue and enable the subtitle track. I hope Crispin Freeman or whoever writes for him does not resort to it any further than this volume. Yuck!

I agree about the dialogue--I'm watching the dub on the DVDs since this is my third time through the series just to check it out, and the name confusions are problematic. It kind of takes away the shock of the name change when they call her Ciz all the way through, instead of starting with Sim (fansub version name) and later changing to Cz (which is also from the name of a weapon, an abbreviation for Czechoslovakia). I know dubs have to change some things that are "too Japanese" or otherwise unwieldy, but I don't see the point in changing that particular name. Let's hope they improve it in the next two volumes, since that's when the story will get more complex/interesting.

I don't know what fansub you watched, but the one I watched used the proper Cz, and Ciz names. Anyway, I noticed that there was no mention of the poor video quality that happens every 2 episodes for 2 episodes (Ex: Ep 3 and 4 and 7 and 8 have video problems, while 1, 2, 5 and 6 were fine, and this problem is mirrored on the R2. The fansub I originally watched used Sim. I cannot fathom why it was changed to Ciz for the English dub, but as I said in the review, this was a sloppy production in general, and not just on the dub.
kusanagi-sama, I need you to elaborate on the "poor video quality" point you mentioned. I have watched the fansubs several times, and both DVDs at least twice through, and never noticed this. There are spots that are worse than others, granted, but I've seen no consistency in them. khryoleoz: I have no clue what you're talking about, either, as I noticed nothing of the sort. Can you cite specific examples? |

The fansub I watched used "Cz" or "Ciz." Those names make more sense than "sim" considering the frequent use guns for names. The peacemakers, in particular.

I'm mainly referring to the very noticeable grain and alaising (interlaced) video (see english translated ending credits, and also when you pause the video, you get jaggies). |

It was the first lines spoken by the Galil character. I've socialized with literary elites in the past, and not one of them had ever uttered "thou hast" to convey whether "I had". After this, or rather after the scene returned to Pacifica and the gang, I had to switch back to the Japanese language track and enable subtitles. The quality control is alarming to allow the spelling error and the character name inconsistency is baffling. I thought it was Shizu/Sim? |

This is what happens when fansubbers get cute when writing out subtitles.
Alucard becomes "Arucard" is my fav example. "Ciz" is a term that can be applied to a Chezch weapon. It fits the rest of the weapon-themed names in the series. |

I realize that Shizu would be a romanized phonetic spelling of Ciz or CZ (as the Japanese do not have the phonetic syllable "see" and with the exception of some like "n" all other consonants are pronounced with a vowel, hence "zu" in lieu of just "z". But what is Cin? Where did that come from?

The point of having the name change hinges on the various events in episode 8, namely spoiler[the young girl's transformation into a Peacemaker]. It makes sense to have it one name for awhile and then change it upon revealing her true identity. After I get home today, I'm going to check the katakana in the credits for the name, but I think it's something like Suin for the original name. They definitely don't say "Shizu" in the Japanese when they first meet her in episode 7. "Cin" is a reasonable romanization, as perhaps they wanted to avoid writing "Sin."
EDIT: In the episode 7 credits, the katakana in her name are スィン (SU i N); the smaller イ character, when it follows ス, indicates that the English "see" sound should be pronounced, although Japanese doesn't have this sound normally (it is said like English "she" instead, as noted in other posts). Thus, if the dubbers were on the ball, they would have pronounced her name like the English word "scene." In the episode 8 credits, both スィン and シーズ (SHII ZU) appear on same VA credit line, for obvious reasons. The fansub I watched was a little bit off in putting "Sim," but at least they didn't add a "zu" syllable to the original name when there's no way in hell to romanize "SU i N" with that result. Of course, they aren't alone in butchering the Japanese I sound; ADV, for instance had no qualms about Shinji as "shin" (as in the part of the leg) rather than the "sheen" sound in "machine." |

I believe there were a few hints in the first episode (like the very beginning) that suggested that Scrapped Princess is both SF and fantasy.
