Can second that. Wakanim Russia holds the rest of Europe's licenses hostage, even in countries like San Marino, where in my knowledge no one speaks Russian as their first language, so if you want to watch their titles legally, you better take language courses. And it doesn't seem they're willing to (or can) change that. So far only Wakanim Nordic is in English and can be only watched in those regions (Scandinavian countries plus Netherlands).

I wish I did. The sad thing is, Wakanim has the right ideas in some cases. The video and audio quality is definitely better than Funi, you can even download the episodes to watch them offline (even if they're hardsubbed). It's a shame they have to kill the usefulness of their service by having no option to change the language in your region.

My condolences for Animelab. At the very least their homepage wasn't region-locked, unlike Funi, where I'm not allowed to read even their news or their blog.

Wakanim thinks Eastern European countries, including the *Baltics, are parts of Russia. As a Lithuanian user I feel so salty.

*Ironically the UN recognizes the Baltic countries as Northern Europe but Wakanim thinks we are part of Russia.

Wait, what?! I knew of the Wakanim Russia situation but thought it's only in Eastern Europe. San Marino??? What the hell, Wakanim?

OK, my bad, it looks like they've changed things last I checked, now it's like this:

Quote:
Wakanim is available in French in the most parts of the French-speaking world, which includes: Metropolitan France, DOM TOM, Benelux, Switzerland, Francophone African territories (Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria), Canada (Quebec).

Wakanim is available in English in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland, and Denmark.

Wakanim is available in German in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Wakanim is available in Russian in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania,

For example, Netherlands is no longer on the list of available regions. And no, I didn't cut the list off intentionally, that's how it looks like on their homepage, you can check it yourselves.

https://www.wakanim.tv/sc/v2/support/faq

EDIT: ok, that's another miss on my part, they're being covered in the Benelux countries. But that makes it even worse, it's not just Russian, but also French and German in regions where it's not being spoken (Netherlands, half of Belgium, Italian parts of Switzerland). In short, it's a mess.

EDIT2: ok, I screwed up with Switzerland too, corrected it

EDIT3: with further research, it looks like I was right after all, San Marino is listed on Wakanim Russia, although in Cyrillic. I used Wikipedia as a help and these are the full list of countries:

Quote:

Wakanim RU, in Russian, is available in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saint-Marin, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Ukraine.

Saint-Marin is San Marino.

No news, but I assure you all the Netflix anime announcements will be referenced by Sony and AT&T's lawyers in explaining why there will be enough competition after the merger.

At least Wakanim knows you exist. Meanwhile they seem to believe Europe ends at the Pyrenees.

But it's such a dumb situation, they have the English subs on hand, I can't believe there's a CT issue for the translation getting in the way, so just throw the English sub in there by default, there's literally no downside. Netflix used to do the same thing where they just assumed no one in Portugal could possibly want to watch anime with anything but a Portuguese sub. At least now they always seem to throw in a selection of subs for the bigger expat communities, as well as English.
