Is it really "fully" animated, though? I know the TV anime naturally couldn't adapt all of the manga, since it was still running at the time, but was all that was missing from it the final story arc, which The First Slam Dunk adapts? Or is there content between what the TV anime covered & the final arc that has yet to be adapted?

Wait, so the movie is called The First Slam Dunk but it actually adopts the last part of the manga? That's...needlessly confusing.
Seriously, from the title I just assumed it was a prequel.

Yep, and it's likely partly why Toei was insanely secretive about not revealing anything about the plot, and even most reviews were apparently instructed to not reveal what it was about. I didn't find out it was adapting the final arc until it got reviewed here on ANN a few months back.

This is how you know Slam Dunk was made before 1997, because otherwise it would've said not to watch right in front of the TV (or in the dark).

Before reading this I knew next to nothing about Slam Dunk other than it having a legendary reputation, but now I almost want to check it out. It sounds like it has the same big dumb fun shonen energy that Yu Yu Hakusho had, and I am totally down for more of that.
