And what's wrong with that? Both are utter nightmares. I'm pretty sure the minuscule amount of cosplayers aren't going to put America in a worse economic state that it already is. |

This just seems completely misguided to me, as cosplaying takes either frickloads of money, frickloads of hard work, or both. Heck, the only reason I only just recently was able to start cosplaying was because I had a job that allowed me to spend that kind of money.
I get what the article was trying to say that harsh reality leads to people finding fun things to do instead (hasn't it always been that way though?), but I don't understand how hard work/spending money equals jobless/unmarried/childless. How stupid. |

This issue isn't that the bad economy changes people's underlying desire for children, but rather people who would have had children are rendered unable to do so. I haven't read this paper, but I have read other things relating to Japanese birth rates, and it's effects. The other paper's themes, or side points where not Bad Economy ----> Cosplayers ----> Don't Have Childern They where rather Bad Economy ----> No Job ------> Lots of Free Time ------> Addition Cosplayers AND Bad Economy ----> No Money ------> Lack of means to support children ----> Drop in birth rate ------> Contracting Economy -----> Cyclical effect AND Bad Economy ----> No Job ------> No Skills or Ability to Support Self -----> Lack of Self Realization ------> Addition Hikomori ------> Drop in Birth rate -----> Contracting Economy -----> Cyclical effect Its actually similar to what happen during the great depression and why the Works Projects Administration (WPA) was created. oh so much so, children are not "small pet animals" they are additional PEOPLE that live in your house who can potentially grow up in a very unpredictable manner, even if they become relatively well behaved individuals (which is the best case scenario) it still is years of effort waiting for them to become self sufficient enough to leave the house. |

Sigh, I've encountered Mr. Pethokoukis work before. He generally is pretty good at outlining how whatever national train wreck is currently happening came about.
Cosplay is only connected to the current US economic malaise by the thinnest of strands. Yes, people have idle time on their hands because the economy isn't providing jobs for them. Yes, those same people are putting off Marriage, Buying a Home and Having Kids. Cosplay is better than some of the alternatives for an idle person, ummm strike that, it's better than most of the alternatives. But to be honest he really should have just left this one alone. I do like to cosplay, but I do also have intentions to one day get married and have at least one kid. I like portraying as a fictional character and I have no intentions to quit doing it because of some article claiming it's not doing the economy any good. Plus I have seen families cosplay at a few conventions before, so I know there is such thing as cosplaying for a hobby and raising a family at a same time.

I agree partially with the article. I do know a few cosplayers stuck with almost no pay and no prospects in life - but in a stable relationship now. Still cosplay at a con is one f the few times when these people can rise above and be judged on something else they do.
But yeah, the abundance of cosplay can be taken as a sign of the economic times for a good chunk of the community. I think anyone trying to make fun of the writer is twisting his words. From personally experience I cosplayed from 2005-2013 non-stop, every con I went to. It was practically required for me! But then I started presenting panels of my accumulated knowledge. I no longer feel required to cosplay, nor being left out if I do not. I know some people who would be lost at a convention if they couldn't cosplay and be the center of attention for a weekend or two a year. Some people find the time to cosplay because they have not a lot going on and can spare the time to do so. Some people find the time to cosplay because they're well off enough to make the time. Alright people! Let's be in control and become the people who can make the time, rather than the free time being the byproduct of economic uncertainty! |
