The Trials of Kumamon, a Professional Prefecture Mascot

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

Being an official mascot is hard work. The job can be dirty and thankless, and mascots can be stuck promoting a product or area that isn't interesting. Kumamoto Prefecture's bear mascot Kumamon is one of the lucky ones whose charm has grabbed attention outside of his home. He's raised hundreds of billions of yen, presented at Harvard of all places, and met the Japanese royal family.

In one of his many engagements, Kumamon appeared on a variety program and the show revealed its not all sunshine and rainbows for Japan's favorite bear.

In the video, Kumamon meets his match attempting to descend from a train and watches in silent horror as his glove is devoured by a mochi-pounding machine.
