Saori Hayami Voices Finland Mascot in Short Anime

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Embassy of Finland in Tokyo debuted a short anime about its Twitter account mascot "Fin-tan" on Monday. The Twitter account polled followers on who they would like to hear voice Fin-tan, and voice actress Saori Hayami was selected from the suggestions to voice the character.

The short is the first anime to star an embassy's mascot. It was created in part to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Finland's independence, and in part to raise an interest in Finland among Japanese people. A second episode is planned for spring, and a third is slated for this year.

Fin-tan's creator Kenji Itoso served as the anime's chief director and general producer. Daichi Kanbara plays the announcer and Aya Suzaki will voice the character "Yuki" in the second episode.

In the first episode, "Fin-tan Unique Taikai ni Challenge!" (Fin-tan challenges unique competitions), Fin-tan tries his hand at several of Finland's real unusual contests: air guitar, mobile phone throwing, and sitting in a sauna.

In addition, a VR project featuring Fin-tan is in development at Finland's Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

The Finnish embassy's Twitter account has shown its love of anime before by chatting about Strike Witches and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. The embassy also endorsed Kenji Itoso's Santa Company anime film.
