Writer Makes Love Rice TV Anime's Rice Pizza

posted on by Jennifer Sherman

Even anime that do not focus on food often feature some delectable-looking dishes. In addition to restaurants and cafes that offer anime-inspired foods, hungry fans sometimes attempt to recreate cooking from their favorite series or films.

The Anime! Anime! website writer Shizuku Tsukino launched her "AniMeshi Tsuttemita" (I Tried to Make Anime Food) column on the site in 2015, and her 20th installment debuted on April 30. In the latest installment, Tsukino decided to make dishes inspired by the Love Rice television anime series. First, she made the rice pizza recipe that appears in the ending sequence of the anime's third episode.

Tsukino also made original matcha rice pudding.

Tsukino's column previously featured dishes inspired by anime such as Pokémon, Kemono Friends, March comes in like a lion, and Assassination Classroom.

The Love Rice anime premiered on April 5, and Crunchyroll is streaming the series as it airs.

The anime project anthropomorphizes rice (kome in Japanese) into schoolboys. At the Kokuritsu Inaho Academy ("Rice Ear Academy," a wordplay on national schools), five new rice-inspired students attempt to supplant bread as the popular grain at the school. The new students form the "Love Rice" unit and challenge themselves to perform at the "Harvest Show" to show the delicious appeal of rice grains. The "heartwarming 'kome'dy with laughs and passion" promises to let audiences rediscover the virtues of rice ("Japan's soul food").

Rice lovers may also want to check out the card-based smartphone game Yui no Shinobi, which debuted for iOS, Android, and PC on March 14. The game features anthropomorphized ninja rice balls.
