Gadget Tsūshin's 2018 Buzzwords Honor Detective Conan, Pop Team Epic, Cells at Work

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The year is coming to a close and Gadget Tsūshin's Anime Ryūkōgo Taishō, a yearly list of the most popular anime-related buzzwords, announced which characters and phrases were on the tips of otaku's tongues all year. Gadget Tsūshin announced the top three in June, but the most popular terms have shifted in the last six months.

In first place is Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner character Tōru Amuro. The blonde man of many identities already won the "Best Character" prize at Shogakukan's 31st annual DIME Trend Awards last month. The character grabbed attention after his film earned 9 billion yen (US$79.2 million) at the Japanese box office this year. Magazine's featuring the character sold out and he's also the star of his own spin-off manga.

Second place went to the female fans of the Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner, known as "Amuro's Women." A webcomic popularized the term in May and fans of the Detective Conan character have since taken it on a moniker.

Third place went to Pop Team Epic, but not its "Hellshake Yano" segment. The phrase "Sate wa Anti Dana Ome" (So, you're a hater?) from the anime's seventh episode won over its many memorable moments. The phrase came to represent the series via Japanese social media after taking off via the messaging app LINE.

Coming up just behind Pop Team Epic is Cells at Work! The edu-tainment anime stars characters representing cells within the human body with the Red Blood Cell and White Blood Cell taking the lead in the show. The characters that really grabbed viewers' attention were the adorable Platelets. "Kesshōban-chan" (Platelets) took the #4 spot followed by their catchphrase "Ano ne! Ano ne!" (Um, hey!).

The top #10 Anime Buzzwords are:

  1. Tōru Amuro (Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner)
  2. Amuro's women (Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner)
  3. "So, you're a hater?" (Pop Team Epic)
  4. Platelets (Cells at Work!)
  5. "Um, hey! Um, hey!" (Platelets/Cells at Work!)
  6. "Ippai Chuki" ("I love you so much"/Pop Team Epic)
  7. Hellshake Yano (Pop Team Epic)
  8. Ei ei, Okotta? ("Hey, are you upset?" Pop Team Epic)
  9. Kuso Anime ("Crappy anime"/Pop Team Epic)
  10. Takagi-sanme (Karakai Jōzu no Takagi-san)
