Shogakukan's DIME Trend Awards Crowns Detective Conan's Tōru Amuro as Best Character

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The award ceremony for publisher Shogakukan's 31st annual DIME Trend Awards was held on November 14 and honored Detective Conan's own Tōru Amuro character with its "Best Character" prize. Amuro, who surged in popularity following the Detective Conan: Zero's Executioner film, was present with his voice actor Tohru Furuya.

The character definitely embodies "trending" as magazines featuring Tōru have sold out. The character has since taken on jobs at a cafe and is starring in his own spin-off manga.

The two volume spin-off manga has over 1.3 million copies in print and the Zero Enforcer film earned over 9 billion yen (US$79.2 million) at the box office.

The DIME Trend Awards acknowledge people, products, services, and more that achieve popularity during the given year. This year is the first time a manga character was given the Best Character award. The prize was shared with idol group Keyakizaka46. During the ceremony Furuya shared that since the movie premiered he's gained close to 50,000 new followers on Twitter and he knows one fan fell in love with the character and saw the film 152 times.

Furuya has played countless popular roles during his 50 year career including Amuro Ray in Mobile Suit Gundam and Tuxedo Mask in Sailor Moon.

DIME magazine also acknowledged the Zozo Suit, QR code payment, AirPods wireless headphones, the TikTok app and more. The full list of winners can be found in the January 2019 issue of DIME magazine.
