The official website of Pokémon Expo Gym announced on Friday the facility will close on September 24. Sanoyas Holdings opened the facility in Osaka's Expo City complex on November 19, 2015.
IT Media reported that the business will close with a loss of about 1.5 billion yen (about US$13.5 million), after its March consolidated report showed a 2.4 billion yen (about US$21.5 million) deficit.
Customer membership cards will continue to work until the end date. After the end date, the staff will handle repayment of remaining membership card funds in accordance with the law, and will announce more details on its official website.
The "edutainment" facility features stations such as "Charizard's Battle Colosseum" and "Gardevoir's Control Score," where fans can play games and learn about Pokémon abilities. Completing the areas can earn the player prizes on their Nintendo 3DS Pokémon games.
